Transitions decreasing Project Duration

I have VideoStudio 11 running under XP/SP2.

In Preferences I have Image Duration set to 4 sec and Transition Duration set to 1 sec.

I now create a short project by insert 10 jpeg images into the Storyboard. As expected the displayed Project Duration is 40 sec.

I now insert 9 transitions by using the "Apply transition effects to all clips" button. A check on the individual images and transitions shows that they are all 4 sec and 1 sec, as expected. However, the Project Duration has now decreased to 31 sec.

What is going on? If the transition time was added to the image time you would expect a Project Duration of 49 sec. If each transition time was simply taken from the corresponding image duration then you would expect the project duration to remain at 40 sec. So, where have the missing 9 sec disappeared to?

What you see is correct.

When you apply a Transition the Video clips are literally overlapped by the duration, then the transition applied over the top. (if that makes sense)

The overall length of the two clips will reduce by the duration of the transition.

When I did a project with the full 120 jpegs, the project duration deceased from 8 to 6 minutes, that is a 25 % decrease. And your explanation now makes clear the apparent coincidence that 1 sec is 25% of 4 sec.

Isn't amazing how simple things look with 20-20 hindsight!
