What I tend to use as a DVD Menu backdrop is a screen grab from somewhere within the video.
Alternatively take a 20 second section from the video and use it as a moving back ground. When I do this I place a solid colour block over the video and then reduce the transparancy of the colour block to let the video show through. This makes the video a part of the background rather than taking over from the rest of the Menu such as the buttons and text.
Doing it this way the DVD Menu relates to the actual video you are about to see.
