Freeware Compositing Program

Post by Ken Berry »

I have just downloaded a freeware compositing program called amusingly enough Debugmode Wax 2.0e. It can be found at http://www.debugmode.com/wax/

Our Australian PC User magazine just included in its awards for top software. Though the mag says that it lacks some of the tricks of top line compositing programs (which of course cost $$$), it nevertheless says it is excellent for what it does do.

That includes rotoscoping, a particle generator and 3D titling. Best of all, it seems to work with Vista.

Great for those of us who don't have Graphics Lab or have found that Cool 3D/Production Studio doesn't work under Vista!

And Steve (sjj1805): you might want to have a look at it and consider entering it into our Freebies page...

Ken,
I just downloaded wax and it looks pretty good. It says it can be used as a plugin to Photoshop. Do you by chance know how that is accomplished? I have Photoshop CS3

Also, how would we bring it into VS11 Plus?

As Steve says..

There were a few people that put in requests to get Satish (developer of Wax, and Wink), to write a plug-in for Ulead products. That was last year, and still nothing.

The only workaround right now as I see it is render the file with the transistions & effects required and insert them into VS11.5 :(

Also you can change the time duration of the transition effect.
Go to VFT folder under Wax click on the transition and it will open a window for editing the timelines.

I am fairly familar with VS11 Plus functionality now and just touching the tip of the iceburg in WAX.

What do you see to be the value of WAX as an additional product in your quiver to work in conjunction with VS. Are there easier ways or more things you can do with WAX compared to VS?

Just curious.

Rob -- I am about as conversant in Wax as you are. In fact, I had not even noticed any reference to Photoshop. I saw the plug-in for Adobe Premiere and other programs, but not Photoshop, so I can't help you there...

As for benefits from the program vis-a-vis what VS can or cannot do, I said it all when I just mentioned:
That includes rotoscoping, a particle generator and 3D titling. Best of all, it seems to work with Vista.

In effect rotoscoping allows you to 'follow a highlighted head' by allow you, on a simplisitic level, to insert a highlight in a moving video which lets the highlight follow the highligted area of video across and around a screen. A great tool in its own right.

The particle generator allows you to do, say, titles which explode into tiny particles or dissipate in a mist of particles etc. And 3D titling (including particle effects) is something that Cool 3D/Production Studio does well but very slowly. But it doesn't work in Vista. So that is why I am pleased about Wax appearing to work with Vista. And there are a ton of other things in Wax I haven't even explored yet.

Incidentaly we have a fix:
How to get Ulead Cool 3D to work in Vista
sjj1805 in link wrote:I just "Killed two birds with one stone"
I installed Cool3DPS onto my Vista Home Premium laptop, created a very short clip to test the above problem and then used VideoStudio 11.5 to test out the new "Upload to YouTube" function.

Here is the result - nothing fancy - only last a few seconds.

Thanks for the advice about that Steve. I went and dragged out my now positively ancient disc containing Cool 3D Production Studio, and after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing with it not being able to find an earlier version (as I had an upgrade version of PS), I installed it on my new Vista Ultimate computer. And it went smoothly. I even did a quick test run of it, outputting a video title which also worked fine. There is a residual problem, but I am posting details of that on the Cool 3D Board in the thread you kindly pointing out the link to!
