For all you folks having trouble with mp4 files, here's the solution:
http://mp4cam2avi.sourceforge.net/index.htm#intro
The converter -- mpfcam2avi -- converts with no loss in quality that I can tell and no real increase in file size.
Far better than Super, etc., because unlike those apps, it doesn't decompress.

As the mp4 file is most likely in an avi wrapper then it is meaningless to say what you have put.
The are over 800 avi file types, 99.9% of them compressed, so you could choose from many types to coinvert to to retain file size, but by changing a lossy format from one to another YOU WILL lose quality, of that there is no doubt. Whether it is noticeable depends on what you are changing to what.
As dv.avi is the std in digital video, this is what most people compare to when looking at file size, as this is 13gb per hour, but once you have a certain file quality, even going to uncompressed avi of 60gb per hour, you won't increase the file quality, what isn't there now, won't be there later.
Perhaps tell us what type of avi you converted to?

MP4CAM2AVI simply re-packages the MPEG-4 data into an AVI file. The main advantage of AVI is that the AVI file header contains a CODEC-code (FourCC code) that tell the software which CODEC to use for decoding.
If this allowed Movie Factory to use an otherwise unusable MPEG-4 file, that's great! However, if you are making a regular DVD, the file will have to be re-coded to MPEG-2 at some point.
