Video Studio 11 Plus Upgrade loading Fatal Error

Post by Eddie333 »

I have had VS 10 for a while and honestly have not used it heaps. I just bought the 11 Plus Upgrade online. The PC I first loaded 10 and the 11 Plus upgrade on was not up to the system requirements. 11 plus loaded and would operate, it would not capture HDV from a Sony HVR-A1P. I reckoned that was because the PC was not up to it. Having successfully loaded 11 Plus (albeit in a Pent 3) and seen it fire up, I assumed I had downloaded a good copy of the 11 Plus upgrade..... so I purchased a HP Pent 4 3.0 gig with Hyper Threading. The machine has 2.5 gb of RAM. Being HP and meeting the VS 11 Plus requirements I loaded my VS 10, then attempted to load the 11 Plus upgrade. The 10 loaded and works, no problems. I cannot successfully load the 11 Plus upgrade, I get a fatal error just short of making a shortcut for the software.

I tried to reload after a cold boot and was told the sw was on the computer and would not let me install over the top of the first try.

I deleted the Video Studio folder in the programs folder and tried again....got the same fatal error.

I am hoping somebody can say, "All you have to do is this one simple little thing....." I have seen some "fix" messages that say , do another download, remove all references to VS 11 Plus, even in the registry. Now the registry (I have heard) is something you do not mess with unless you know what you are doing. I do not fit in the registry expert category.

Sooooooo, I am hoping somebody does come on here and say, just do this....or maybe even give some details on how to excise VS 11 Plus from the registry.

Thanking anybody in advance,
Eddie

Welcome to the forums,

You're not going to like this, but given what you done, deleting a folder and not uninstalling the program, can cause a bigger problem, getting it uninstalled.

When VS installs, it throws files all over the place, not unlike most programs nowadays. So just deleting the folder under program files is just one of many that are associated with the program, and your PC knows that. How? the registry.

Steve has written the steps on doing a complete, clean uninstall. There's not that many entries in the registry that you need to remove. Instructions can be found here : Re-installation of Ulead Products

Note If you're running Vista, I think that the All Users has been replaced with a folder called Roaming, I'm not 100% sure, as I don't have my Vista machine fired up right now.

You also should delete the folders found in the following places:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\11.0
C:\Documents and Settings\Ron's Main\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\11.0 (Replace Ron's Main with your user name).

The message you saw when you attempted to do an over install is correct. VS will not allow that. Instead what it does is uninstall the program first. Then install it. If you had the boxed version (discs), then you are able to do a "repair" from the Control Panel of Windows.

Next thought, when you deleted the folder, did you also empty your recycle bin? If not go to your recycle bin, find the folder, right-click and choose Restore. This will place it back. Then try to uninstall the program.

If that doesn't work try doing a System Restore, to a point before you installed the program. I don't know that path to that off the top of my head, if you're running Vista.

Thanks for the welcome and advice.

The first thing I did after the first and other Fatal Errors was to try and uninstall with Add or Remove Programs. VS 11 Plus never showed up there.

I followed your instructions and deleted bits I could find in the other folders. I also restored the system to pre VS 11 upgrade loadfing. I downloaded the VS 11 Plus Upgrade again and tried it......same fatal error.

I am thinking I should somehow get the disks that come in "The Box" version so I might do a repair. Is it possible to go to Corel or somebody and get these disks, or download them? Then, can the "Repair" disk fix a VS 11 Plus install that XP pro's "Add or Remove Programs" does not see?

My involvement with VS started with version 6. I have always loved the Ulead programs. I am hoping that Corel is supporting the products and I can get VS 11 Plus working. I have been teaching VS 8 and VS 9 at two Community Colleges here and I would like to put a case to them to upgrade.....I just have to get the software working first.

I don't think a repair install will fix a problem, when it is not showing up in the control panel.

Try running the Hot Fix. It is geared toward issues with the AVControl SKD. However with VS11+ if the AVControl SDK fails, it can cause VS not to run. I've not heard of it not preventing it from installing. It generally gives an error about having to re-install it. You can get the Hot Fix from the updates page on Ulead's website: http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp.htm.

You might also update the DirectX to the November release, from the Microsoft Website: Click HERE

What error is given when it fails to install? This is the first I've come across where it does not show in the Add/Remove.

You are also suffering from the misapprehension that you have to have VS10 installed before you can install the upgrade. This is not so. They upgrade is in fact the full version. All you need is the serial number of VS10, and VS11 should ask for that as well as the S/N for itself. However, I don't think that is the cause of your problem...

Thanks Ken and Rob for more bits. It is 5:00 a.m. here and I have to get to work. I will try some more this afternoon.

Rob, The Fatal Error had no number or name, it was just a message that a Fatal Error had occurred. The first time you have heard of this, well I am the Bunny that gets all the curly ones on the install side. The install side, the possible problems/fixes is just not where I shine.

Ken, I am definitely suffering. What is really irritating is it installed in a machine under min. specifications (and ran except for HDV) and will not in one that is over. I would have thought (from a not so technical user view) by version 11 most software would go easily into brand name gear or tell one what went wrong if it did not. Silly me, eh?

Again, I will get back on it this afternoon.
