"Project" playback jerky. Canon HG10 camera

Post by westlight »

Working with VS 11 Plus with all the updates.

Too new at this to ask the right question perhaps. I've recorded video on the new Canon HG10 HD camera. Used the software that came with the camera to transfer the video from the camera hard drive to the hard drive I'm using to edit the video, H: drive. I used the "Insert Media to Library" in the Files option. No problem. Playback seems fine. When I drag a clip from the library to the timeline and play it back it is extremely jerky.
I did do some searches for this on the Forum but only seem to find info for earlier versions.

Also, I tried changing the "Play Back method" to High Quality and received a message "High Quality playback mode is disabled with current project settings". Project playback is jerky using either playback modes.

When I transferred my video to the PC's hard drive I just used the USB cable and the cameras softwear. When I tried to Use the Ulead capture mode my camera does not show up as a source.

Other than that all's well! :?

I believe all my system info is listed if that's of help.

Thanks, David

Hi westlight,

You are uploading your video from your camera to PC the correct method using your USB cable to transfer. There is no need to "capture" as such from Video Studio(VS).

So now we need to address the issu of the jerky preview and we'll need som extra information that VS can provide us easily enough.

Open VS and with some video on your time line right click on it and have a look at the video Properties. Write them down.

Next, under File your Project Properties should match the information you wrote down for the video properties. If you could post them here on this forum we can further advise what's happening.

Lets try that and see how you go.

The HG10 records in the avchd/h264 format. You may be able to import the videos into VS11+ by putting the cam into computer mode. Then XP assigns a drive letter to the cam. In VS11+ you use the Insert DVD/-VR avchd disk function, click on "Import From Folder", navigate to the drive letter assigned by XP to the cam, then down to the avchd or bdmv folder on the disk. When you get to the correct folder VS Import will activate.
.
NOTE: IF VideoStudio cannot see your cams drive letter that assigned by wiindows when your in the VS Media Browse Screen hit the "F5" function key to refresh VS cache memory. If you started VS without the drive letter assigned to the cam it will not show up. You must refresh the VS cache by hitting the F5 function key while in the Browse mode for selecting media.
Hitting the F5 function key refreshes VS view of the computers enumerated resources.

Your computer is a little slow for proper playback of avchd video while in the editing mode. Under Preferences use "Instant Playback". For proper editing you probably have to create a proxy file or try to find a more compatible setting for the project settings to edit in..

A very fast computer will help converting your videos much faster. For editing though you may still have to use a proxy file because the avchd format is so compressed. This also depends on the software being used.

All these settings differ depending on your project goals. Do you want to make a dvd or a high defintion avchd disk.

Update to MF5.6 Special Edition that comes with the Canon HG10:

IF you also have VS11+ installed I do not know if this update will affect VS11+ installation.

Hi Clevo and etech...or anyone else with suggestions!
Here is the info you requested Clevo.
The original file format is .m2ts

The video clip properties are as follows.
Format NTSCHDMV
File size 28,041 kbs
Duration 29.029 sec.

Video
Video Type- H.264 Video Upper Field First
Total frames- 870 frames
Attributes - 24 bits, 1440 x 1080, 16.9
Frame Rate- 29.970 fps
Data Rate - Variable bit rate (max. 16,000kbps)

Audio Type Dolby Digital Audio
Total Samples 1,393,393
Attributes- 48,000 hz
Layer- None
Bit rate- 256

When I checked the "Project Properties there seemed to be some differences but no way to make them match. This is mostly "Greek" to me.

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

In the "Edit file format" drop down I had the option of MPEG file, or Microsoft .avi files. MPEG was selected.

I also tried enabling the "Smart Proxy" function and have "Instant Playback" selected. When I have "Smart Proxy" selected VS locks up every time. What's up with that?

What I am trying to accomplish is at first to just come up with a good quality edited video of these clips to playback on the PC full screen. Eventually, once I get a better understanding of this, I would like to do a dvd and or a high def avchd disk.

Bit of more than I bargained for it seems. :o
