What a piece of crap

Post by HatingIt »

As a person who has been purchasing Canon cameras for years, I felt comfortable purchasing the HG10. God, what a mistake that was.

The camera itself is very good, but the problem is with the AVCHD files that is not supported by any editing software.

Making this problem worse is that Canon included DVD MovieFactory 5.6, which is supposed to convert the files into something that I can edit.

However, this has worked only a handful of times since I purchased the camera. Usually, it just stops working in the middle of processing a bunch of files. I tried reducing the number of files, but it still just stops working, where I end up with the old "not responding".

I ended up having to find a copy of Nero 8 to process the files, but even that gives me some problems. But not as much as that godforsaken Ulead.

What a piece of crap.

When you invest in the latest technology you have to expect problems along the way.
When dv first came on the market there were hardly any programmes that could handle it's large files, now it is the most widely used format in camcorders and every single app can use the files.

Maybe in 10 years time avchd will be as common and all apps will handle it, who knows, but in the mean time you need to expect growing pains.

Investing in the upgrade to MF6 and the new hd patch would most likely have brought great gains for you, but I suspect this is now too late.

As a final point, Ulea don't read these posts, only enthusiasts and/or people who use the programmes, so venting anger here will gain nothing at all, because it shows you've done no research into the product at all and it's capabilities.

Hmm. There are several thousand members of this forum who seem pretty satisifed with it and who seek and give help and explanations in a calm, unemotive and methodical manner.

Could it be that HatingIt is one of the sad few who rush to condemn the product when they could've used their energy to carefully explain their problem (having filled in their system details) and calmly and methodically seek help?

He is not alone in this category. Many persons are unfamiliar with these new high definition formats and the files they produce.

When you add it all up it's quite an expensive investment.
I wonder what Canon's thoughts are on this, they had to test the software. I wonder how many other persons have reported problems with MF5+_SE included with the HG10.

Unfortunately the "Free" versions given away by other companies are not as good as the full versions provided by Corel.
My laptop computer with Vista Home Edition had MovieFactory 5 pre-installed.
It is a special "Toshiba" version. I didn't pay too much attention to it because I already have several full versions of MovieFactory (See signature block below) but when a user on this forum had a problem with MovieFactory 5 for Toshiba, I opened my copy to investigate.

I was horrified to find that the Toshiba version did not support JPG images.
How odd - it must be the most popular format used by digital cameras and so for the vast majority of people investing in a Toshiba laptop they would probably not bother with the program.

I think the same will apply to this users "Canon" version - it is a Special Edition (Or rather Simple Edition) provided by Cannon and various items will have been disabled by the Cannon Corporation.

Here is a write-up on the HG10, information & links to program updates and users manuals.
Corel Application Disc:
The Canon HG10 High Definition Camcorder is bundled with a powerful software suite from Corel™. WinDVD SE lets you play back your recorded video on your computer. You can also easily perform AVCHD Editing in which you can trim, reorder, and combine scenes, as well as add music, titles, and transitions. With the Corel Application Disc, you can use DVD Moviewriter SE when finished to burn your edited video onto either a full size AVCHD DVD or Standard Definition DVD.

*The bundled application is compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Users of this Corel Special Edition Software need to register and check for updates to the program on the ulead website:

Here are updates to the MF5.6 Special Edition program that comes with the Canon HG10:

Goto the links at the bottom of the page to download the updates. Read the instructions.

I too have the DVD Movie Factory 5.60.0179.1 SE (Ver 2.0) which has even more problems. Yes, I did perform the suggested upgrade to handle
files greater than 2GB.

1) The "MenuGuide" applications silently and without explanation did not install. When I tried to bypass Autoplay and manually run the setup file, it started and then abruptly failed without notification or reason. I finally downloaded my first video from the HG10 by using the supplied Canon "Backup" program, although it seems that simply attaching it to the USB bus and using Windows Explorer to copy the files from disk to disk would have also been successful.

2) Trying to import my new AVCHD video fails. Also crashes when trying to import a DVD saved from disk. The AVCHD or DVD is imported, however, when you select either HD or DVD video, the program crashes and asks me if I want to report the problem to Microsoft.

I previously purchased a version of Adobe Premiere Elements. Only when I tried to install it, did I realize that my machine is too old and Elements requires a new fancy graphic instruction in the CPU (which was added with the 64bit processors, which mine is NOT), and it didn't even bother loading the software, it just told me my system didn't meet specs (and why)

I wonder if Corel forgot to check if the new instructions exist before installing them.

Your story is not surprising in the least. I ended up buying the Elecard Converter, which works great compared to the software you're discussing. It's much faster and it never crashes.

It normally goes for $75, but now they're selling it for $56.25 for the holidays. I recommend it for all AVCHD users.

A limitation with the elecard program is it does not author disks, it performs file conversions.

You can do everything in MF6+ Retail Version with the HD-Add-on pack. MF6+ also performs the same file conversions to mpeg2 or avc/h264 as the elecard software.
It's very possible this software isn't compatible with your windows setup. In other words you may have a Universal Codec Pack installed or other codecs that conflict with the program.

Although your version of MF5.6 SE should not be crashing, MF6+ may also crash if you have other software or codecs installed on windows that aren't compatible with the program.

What a piece of crap.
Nero 8 should NOT be causing problems, this is another sign of your computer not being compatible for video editing.

I'm locking this tread because of the word crap. Simply not professional.
