Power Pack doesnt install. this software is dissappointing

Post by catmama »

I like others upgraded from VS 10 to 11 plus because I am buying a new sony camcorder and rather than buy sony's software I upgraded, I might as well have thrown my 60 bucks in the lake. I emailed corel, no answer, and no refund either... can you imagine that???? it doesnt install at all, get error msgs. access denied (0x5) and error: afAsfb77.rra. if push ignore you keep getting a bunch of rra files and it wont install at ll. either will the patch, I have downloaded it six times, reinstalled it three and same thing.
It just doesnt work. I am really feeling ripped off. I hve been a Ulead customer for years. rra. files are files created by install sheild < i think,
using pavillion dv8000 laptop. any ideas??? would be most helpful.
:(

You haven't filled in your System details, so we don't have some important information to work on. What is your operating system? If it is Vista, you might want to right click on the VS installation file and select "Open as Administrator", regardless of whether you have Admin privileges or not. A couple of months ago, someone else with installation problems did that and the installation was successful. (In fact, just yesterday while activating a program I had just installed, I received the message that I could only do so in Administrator mode -- even though I am the only user of this computer and have full Administrator privileges...)

You are correct that .rra files are temporary ones created by InstallShield. So you also might want to clear out your Temp folder (in Vista that's in C:\Users\[Your Name]\App Data\Local) before you try reinstalling VS.

I have tried and still failed

Post by catmama »

OS=win media center xp 2002 SP2, machine-DV8320us, HP pavillion
laptop, HP says try in safe mode, still doesnt work, cleared temp files,
corel says run virus scanner, still no effect, tried to install from several
locations, partioned hdd, and cdrom, still nada, zip, nothing,
tried as administrator and as myself who is the administrator, big 0,
access denied (0x5) "the following error occurred on the file C:/program files /Ulead Systems/Ulead Video Studio 11/afAs28db.rra.

any ideas? I wrote to MS for a hotfix as I googled access denied
(0x5) and found some kind of fix re networking, at this point will try anything......

I would go back & contact Corel.
Get the Boxed Version so you have the correct installation CD's.
Have them mail the Boxed Retail Version of the product to you.

Do you have another computer by chance that you can try installing it on? This will let you know if it is the program or your specifc computer that is causing the problems.

re another computer

Post by catmama »

yes and no. its in a box. not connected. I built it a couple ofyears ago. its a completely
different enviroment than one would have if they would have bought
it retail from a computer company. its doesnt have retail computer company propietary software on it, like most retail machines have.

good idea though. thanks in worse case I will put it back together.

Marianne

at this point I am in the opinion right or wrong thats its a win media center thing. I am going to create restore pt and try ms hotfix.
I dont know what else to do.....I know whats happening sorta but dont know how to fix it and it seems nobody else does either. .

Give it a try. I've never purchased a retail system in my life. They have all been custom built myelf - with the exceptions of my laptops.

doesnt work, only in SP1 enviroment. I think.. I have narrowed it down, I think its an ini file that poorly written. afa etc. ini.
Corel is closed today. tomorrow going to try and resolve issue
with tech support get my $ back. wishful thinking probably.

I have spent literally hundreds if notthousands of dollars with ulead.
too bad they sold out to corel.
I never had any problems until they sold out. I have VS all the back to 6.
dvd movie factory, picture show, photo impact. you name it no problems.
wonder why now.... I have VS9,10 and almost 11. on tihs laptop i prefer to use right now due to space confinements.

I just re-read your original post and it's related to the powerpack installation.
Which of course should be installed AFTER the patch to VS11+ and rebooting.

Most likely in the locations under the C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Video Studio 11+ and it's sub-directories maybe some of these files are marked Read-Only or there is a file under Taskmanager that's loaded because of the VS11+ preload command (when booting ).
Whatever the case the RRA file is supposed to replace a locked file. There shouldn't be any locked files in that directory.
So maybe make sure under the VS11+ directory none of these files are marked read-only or they aren't loaded & running resident in memory (which shouldn't be unless you have the program open).

Double check the attributes on these files & sub-directories, none of them should be marked read-only or a system file.

Read only files

Post by catmama »

I just checked the file directories. in both VS 10 and 11 file folders
AF component all the way to XML are read only but not the individual files.

The folders themselves have read only attributes but not the contents.

Is this what the issue is??????

PS I know about trying to install the patch and power pack after rebooting.

as said, I have removed and downloaded six times, tried from different locations, dvd, cd, parition hdd d, it doesnt matter, it does the same thing over and over. access denied.

why now and only with VS 11......

nothing else has changed havent installed any new devices or software other than nero 8.

I dont see anything in event viewer either. I still think right or wrong
this is a software issue in the program.

Under Program Files Non of my Ulead System directories are read-only.
If running an NTFS file system the default is to inherent properties down stream.
I would remove the read-only flag on the ulead directories, when you do this make sure to select the Include sub-directories & files option.
Also do the same with these 2 directories, I think this may be important because these 2 directories do contain files that are loaded on bootup and are running resident in memory, therefore they are locked files. I wonder if they are also marked read-only (or it's parent directory).
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\VideoStudio 10 & VideoStudio 11
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems ( contains ULCDRSrv.exe )
C:\Program Files\Intervideo ( Contains Devsrv.exe )

I wonder if the rra temporary files are stored in the ulead systmes directory during extraction & after the ULCDRSrv.exe & Devsrv.exe resident programs are terminated they are copied into their correct common files places. If those directories & files are marked read-only could be the problem.

But I would fix the read-only flag on the directories & files. Make sure there aren't any rra files leftover from any failed updates.
Then under Task Manager terminate the following 2 programs running resident in memory:
ULCDRSrv.exe
Devsrv.exe
Then try to install the burning patch.

Ulead has a small program it runs when launching, could be the program is not exiting it properly. It's called preload or similar wording. I don't think that is the problem.

There is a bug that surfaces related to marking files as Read-Only, but it has not been in the above directories.

re; read only

Post by catmama »

I noticed that the powerpack has not been available for download in
over 12 hrs. so maybe I am not the only one and it is... buggy.

I see in another thread that various people get the same blank page and have so for some time.

thanks your advice will give it a try and I think you are on the right track.

unable to change attributes

Post by catmama »

access denied: afaassist. module. ini.

I thought all along it was an ini file problem. None of the folders/directors will let me change the attritubtes from read only to not read only.

when I uncheck the box I get the access denied msg.

?????? whats next???

thanks your insights very helpful and thoughtful.

So you couldn't try or test out what I posted then.
You are running the installer as Administrator, Media Center Edition must be different.
If you do have admin rights you probably have to go under the advanced file security settings. I think Media Center Edition does have security things because it can also be used as a server, probably more protection. What your describing sounds more like Vista with it's file protection.

Either way, if you can't change the files attributes then the installation program can't either.
Your only help is you or tech support.

I would still look into resetting the read-only flag on these directories & files. I've had some problems saving things in VS11+ and it was because the files were marked read-only in my users directory. After resetting them to normal then the program worked correctly.
