HD-DVD Authoring

Post by supercar »

I authored my first HD-DVD today.

I have an HV10 and Ulead VideoStudio 11 and I've downloaded all of the updates. I wrote HD-DVD to a DVD-R disk and it mostly worked.

I got some stuttering early in the footage. The original footage on the computer is smooth.

I tried writing another disk at a slow 2x speed and the stuttering seems to be the same.

Any ideas on what might be causing the stuttering.

Usually this is a burner & media compatibility.
I would stay with DVD-R disks and try another brand.
Try burning at 1/2 the rated dvd speed, usually when having reading problems with a dvd it's recommended to burn at a lower speed.
Some burners don't burn well at the lower speeds.
With all the different burners and media on the market it's hit or miss, I suggest using brand name dvd-r's.
You must get a good burn for dvd's to playback HighDefintion mpeg2 encoded at 25,000kbs.
Have you tried playing to hd-dvd in your computer?
If the hd-dvd plays in the computer my guess would be it's a compatibility issue with the toshiba player..

I did try a second disk writing at a very slow 2x speed. It seemed to stutter exactly the same way and same locations as the first disk, so I'm not sure it is a burn issue.

The playback is on an XBOX 360 HD-DVD drive. I'm not sure how good it is, but it was cheap since we already had the XBOX 360.

I actually didn't try playback on the computer. Do I need anything special to play it back? I can try this tonight.

I'm pretty much a noob at this, so all comments and feedback are welcome.

Thanks,
Dave

I think you may find more help on an XBox360 Forum with the HD-DVD Add-on drive. My experience has been with the Toshiba HD-DVD Players.
Although rule of thumb is burn at a low speed depending on the burner & dvd media this doesn't always hold true.

I have Nero 8 installed with the HighDef add-on pack from nero that can playback HD-DVD or Blu-Ray Disks. That is how I also test & play them back.

I've also heard it's important to install the latest firmware for the Xbox360, has bug fixes & newer playback features for media.
