Windows Media Player & ULead Codec

Post by shanetheshane »

I recently upgarded to DVD MovieFactory 4.0 Disc Creator. Now, my Windows Media Players (and Real Player, for that matter) seems to be using a "ULead DVD Audio/Video Decoder 2" Codec for playing the mpeg2 files I create with my TV capture card.

I'm having two problems with this codec. 1) The video doesn't start playing automatically when WMP is launched with a video file 2) The video is stretchec -- kinda like when you try to stretch 4:3 NTSC signal on a 16x9 screen.

Can someone explain to be how I can change the "default" codec back to whatever it was before? I'm guessing it used the Cyberlink codec that with PowerDVD.

All thoughts appreciated,
shane

Windows Media Player will use the latest installed MPEG codec to play the MPEG file.

If you wish to use CyberLink codec to play the MPEG file, you need to remove PowerDVD and install it after you install Ulead DVD MovieFactory.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the response.

But that didn't help. I uniinstalled, rebooted, & reinstalled PowerDVD; the ULead decoder was still being used. After uninstalling MovieFactory 4, WMP uses the cyberlink codecs. I tried uninstalling PowerDVD (MF4 is still uninstalled) and WMP is still using the cyberlink codecs! I checked my "add/remove programs" setup and the computer's restore cd, but did not find any other cyberlink or codec related software packages.

If anyone has any comments ... boy would I appreciate them! For now Ulead MF4 will have to stay uninstalled.

Thanks!

Ulead MPEG-2 codecs cause problems

Post by VelcroFace »

I also had problems getting MPEG-2 files to play after installing MF 4. Using GSpot I discovered that MF 4 installed two Ulead MPEG-2 codecs, which apparently conflict with other codecs. I also have PowerDVD, but my troubles were with files created by an MPEG-2 codec used by my WinFast PVR TV tuner. They skipped, and a white band covered the lower quarter of the frame.

My solution was to remove MF 4. Unfortunately, the uninstall is buggy, and leaves pointers to the Ulead codec in the Registry. What's more, the captures I made using it were awful. The colors were washed out and smeared, like hand-tinted black-and-white. In my opinion, MF 4 needs some major work before it'll be ready for prime time.

You could use a program to re-order the merit of your codec filters.

Merit is what tells programs which codec you prefer. As I understand it, some programs like to keep changing the highest merit to their companies codecs while running and not change it back. =(

gspot 2.52 b01 and radlight filter manager are two that I found in a google.
I have this same problem (crappy codec) and the Winfast PVR Leadtek codec is my problem as well, I am fairly sure.

These are registery editors (with warm fuzzy software candy coatings) but from my few minutes of Googling on this ...seem to be the type of solution called for.

What little I read said make EXCELLENT documentation of orginal settings and don't go crazy (one change at a time).

Personally I have used gspot often in the past and will go with it to try and solve my issues after some more google searches and reading

Recommended reading explaining what I said above more succently.
