Opening canon RAW CR2 files in PI 12
I recently installed PI 12 on my PC (running windows XP2 plenty of ram plenty of HD space) I am very impressed with the features but I am having a devil of a time trying to open RAW Canon .CR2 files properly. The thumbnail image is right but when I click to open the file all I see is a bright blue screen, if I adjust the temp. settings I can just about make out my image as if under a blue gel.
I tried doing a repair install incase I had some corrupted files but the problem persists. I'm prepared to be a little patient as I realise there is going to be a steep learning curve getting used to the program and I hope I will be able to get this fixed or I'll be forced into going down DxO route, as I need to be able to work with RAW, I like the flexibility of being able to post picture edit.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me solve this or point out what I'm doing wrong

I use Canon cr2 RAW files all the time in PI 12 and never had the problem you describe.
Did you install the PI 12 service pack available here http://www.ulead.com/tech/pi/pi_ftp.htm
Among other things, it will also update the RAW support.

Thanks for your prompt reply
I have just installed the patch/update and restarted my pc but no the problem still persists. I am having to use the Canon DPP program to open the cr2 files edit them and convert and save to jpg before I can open them in PI 12 so as of yet I am still in no position to judge whether PI 12 is better at adjusting my images in RAW than DPP. I was hoping that it would be. So any more ideas, do you need any more info on my setup to help me determine what could be giving me the problem?

Sorry, but I'm fresh out of ideas right now.
I have no problem whatsoever opening my CR2 RAW files as well as the CRW format of my Canon S45.
I have used DigitalPhotoProfessional 1.6, which came with my Canon EOS 350D, also, but I find PI 12 a little more intuitive and easier to use. I have not bothered reinstalling the Canon program on my main editing machine after the last rebuilt because I now prefer to use PI 12.
What model camera do you use? Maybe there is something wrong with the file format?

Thanks again,
My camera is the 40D, the files open perfectly in the packaged Zoom Browser and DPP that came from Canon. I notice that when I click to open a cr2 file with PI 12 that the loader indicator bar (at the bottom of the screen) gets to about 80% smoothly then stops, then rushes the last 20% and then I get an unusual histogram reading (just a couple of peaks) and the Blueish gel colour fills the frame where my picture should be.
I don't suppose the programme is trying to unpack my cr2 files with a TWAIN driver?

I have been able to unpack all the .CR2 RAW files that I took using my Canon 400D so it looks as though the problem is going to be caused by some difference in the RAW .CR2 image file format of the Canon 40D.
Has anyone else noticed this problem. Any ideas on a solution would be appreciated....I don't suppose Ulead have a plugin or fix do they?

RAW Support
It's what I found in Corel's knowledgebase.
PhotoImpact 12 does not support all raw image formats. These raw formats are proprietary to the manufacturer. Moreover, raw formats from the same camera manufacturers or even the same product line can be different from each other.
The list of supported RAW file formats can be found here: http://ftp.ulead.com/pub/Manual/pi12/PI ... _11_06.zip

Canon raw CR2 format
Hi
For Steve-Pix and the 40D problems.
I have a 20D, and no problems with CR2 and PI (11). Just purchased a 5D and experienced same problems as Steve-Pix described.
Work around I found was to use the Canon Image Software to save CR2 file as a Tiff, and PI can open that. Tiff's image info recording apparently is not as good as the CR2, but not that I noticed any difference. All normal functions worked in PI on the Tiff on the samples I took.
Tiff file size for a 12mb CR2 goes to 70mb - which should impress someone!
