Deleting unwanted projects/files

Post by terry dennis »

With such emphasis and need for memory in video editing , there appears to be a total lack of project/file deletion management within VideoStudio.

Am I right in thinking that the only way to achieve this objective is via Windows Explorer and a pick/check/delete or no delete approach ?

No you're not correct Terry..

If you utilize the Libraries, by having all the video, image clips that you use for a given project contained in those folders, once you're finished with your project, you can delete all with just a couple of mouse clicks.

Say you have a video library called Vacation. In this library you have all the clips that you used to produce your vacation DVD. Now you're done, and you no longer are in need that library. You need to determine if you may need to reproduce that DVD later. If so then you need to keep all those clips along with the VSP. But for this example, we determine that the one DVD is enough. We no longer need all those video clips and images.

Open the Vacation library, click on the first thumbnail (video clip), hold the Shift key down, click on the last thumbnail. This selects all those thumbnails. Now select delete (keyboard, right-mouse click, or Edit>Delete). Keep holding the Shift Key down. You will get 2 (two) prompts. The first asking if you really want to delete the thumbnails. Press Yes. You will now get the following prompt:
Image

Pressing Yes to All, will delete all those clips from your computer. You can do the same with all the images. Then once you're done deleting them from the Libraries, just delete the Library...

If you create special library panes within 'Video' in the VS Editor for each project, and have all your video clips in that pane associated with that project, then it is possible to delete all files once you no longer need them (and are sure of this). And you can do it at two levels: simply ridding the files from within Video Studio; but also, if you are doubly sure, from the computer as well. And all from within VS...

Simply open that specific pane, select all the thumbnails within it and click the DEL button. And if you want to delete them also from your computer, then you hold down the Shift button at the same time as you hit DEL. You will be asked if you want to completely remove the files to give you a final choice in the matter. And after that, of course, you can delete the project-specific library pane itself.

And of course, even if you are not organised to the point of gathering your clips into specific panes, then you can still delete individual files one by one using the same approach outlined above... Only then, of course, you have to know which of a bunch of "loose" clips it is that you want to delete.

EDIT: Ron -- we're doing it again!!

I spent some time looking at your last replies and looking at Library Manager ................. my only question is , how do you link the video clips that can be seen in the Library with the folders that have been created via Library Manager ?

Terry,
  • Create your Library folder
  • Open that folder
  • Click on the folder icon to insert/import video or images.
  • A browse window will open. Navigate to the location of your video clips on your PC.
  • Select the ones you want.
  • The next window will appear asking about the clip sequence.
  • Thumbnails will appear in your library of the video or image clips you selected. They are now linked to that Library folder.
If you move or delete one of the actual video clips, VS should prompt you, asking if you want to re-link.

Crikey ! Easy when you know how !

But that has been a very valuable exercise in VS Library management. I am glad I persisted with the questioning , at the expense of being considered a pain in the arse ! I can see the merit in managing projects this way.
Thanks once again for your patience.

Two supplementary questions !

1. If the original clip referred to in the folder , is edited and then saved , how does the library folder reflect this ?
2. Having obtained a system statement of 72.54GB Free memory a few days before I started an exercise on file removal , and then having deleted all the files associated with a particular VS project , I now find that the Free memory has DECREASED to 69.16GB !
The only items added to memory were two VS patches of 55MB and 27MB.
Any thoughts ?
