I'm using VideoStudio 10 and have a JVC hd camcorder which uses the .mod format. I renamed all the video files to .avi (was told this would be better for end result quality) but Ulead will not import them as .avi's - only as mpegs.
NeroVision is able to import my files as avi, so why not Ulead (which is a much better Video editor and what I WANT to use)...?
Thanks in advance...!
Need to import .mod files as avi but it won't let me - help!

When you say you renamed the files to avi, what exactly did you do? If you simply changed the extension from .xxx.mod to xxx.avi, that would not have worked -- or at least done anything in practice -- since they are not avi files. They are in fact mpeg-2 files which happen to use the .mod extension (plus a couple of other differences). However, changing the extension to .mpg usually works in VS so that the program can open them. Native .mod recognition is included in VS11.
I won't comment on whether or not Nero is just ignoring the extension you gave the files and imports them anyway. But it could not have done any more than that. The files remain .mod/.mpg unless you go through a rather more complex conversion process to change them to one of the several formats which use .avi (though mpeg-2 is not one of them).
In any case, the advice about better quality of avi files probably related to DV/AVI, which is what comes from the mini DV video camera, but not your variety of camera. It is indeed arguably better. However, if you start out with .mod/.mpg files, there is nothing at all to be gained by converting them to DV/AVI as any conversion will involve a quality loss. And if you want to eventually burn them to a DVD, they will in any case then have to be converted back to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 files -- thus entailing another quality loss.

There is a bit more to computer files than simply changing the letters forming the file extension.
