Video Pauses At Chapter Change

Post by Rolling Thunder »

Hey all - for some reason, the video on WinDVD occasionally pauses during a chapter change. This happens on all store-bought DVDs, and I was wondering if this was normal? I have a very recent Core Duo system with plenty of memory and a GeForce 8400 GS video card, so I don't think that's the problem. I've checked the settings on my DVD drive, and everything seems to be in order there. I'm also using the latest build of WinDVD 8 Platinum.

Playback is generally flawless, but every now and then there is a brief one second hesitation while the chapter changes during playback. I can certainly live with it, but would be looking to fix this issue if it's not normal. I don't believe this to be a layer change issue since the pauses occur multiple times on any one disc.

If you can offer any suggestions on what I might need to do, please pass them along. I appreciate your help.

This is normal behaviour.

Is there anything I can do about it? Does this occur because the data rate sometimes lags?

No - its nothing to do with the software, its just one of the limitations of the way a DVD works. When you create a DVD you have to try and take these pauses into account and try and make them as natural as possible.

One way round this is to do a fade to black at the end of a clip followed by a fade from black at the start of the next clip.
