I have a question.
Is it possible to continue a project in videostudio 11.5+ (Dutch version) in Vista64 Ultimate which is half done editing (I am lazy) and saved in videostudio v10+ (English version) installed under XP-pro 32 ?
My PC is configured as dual boot with one disk for XP-pro 32 (with the unfinished project in ulead v10+ and the other disk with Vista 64 ultimate were I am going to install the new v11.5+(which is a dutch version).
The objective is to continue the job in the new version which is started in the old version.
Or is it advisable to import the DV-tapes once again and discard the editing work already done?
The project files and imported video are on a third harddrive which I reserve for video editing.
As I said, the video is not yet rendered, just some editing (quite a lot) are saved in the project.
Summarized: can I migrate a saved project acrossed OS-platform, acrossed videostudio-version and acrossed language version?
Or will the projectfile contain quirks like editing actions left out in the new version like removed/obsolete transitions/effects which are not supported anymore in vista and/or ulead11+?
continue or import project from XP (v.10+) in vista (v11.5+)

Welcome to the fourms,
VS programs are backward compatible. So you could use VS11+ to insert a VSP (VideoStudio Project File) from VS10+.You can not edit any other VSP from inside your current project, ie; if you have 2 separate projects let's say Project A.vsp and Project B.vsp, and you have Project B.vsp open. You insert Project A.vsp into the project you're currently working on (Project B.vsp). You can not edit Project A.vsp. You will need to close Project B.vsp, then open Project A.vsp to edit it. I hope I didn't confuse you..
Now since you have the video clips already captured to your HDD, you can simply use VS11+, start a new project, and insert those video clips. What you see on the time-line(s) are not the actual video clips. They are thumbnail representations, of the original video or image clips. The VSP files are nothing but a bunch of instructions, do this to this clip at that time, cut it there, put in transitions, video filters go from here to there, ect., telling the program what to do when you create your video file (Share>Create Video File).
When you do render your project (Share>Create VideoFile) your original video clips and images are left untouched. A new video file is created.
Edited by me to correct the VSP mistake

Ron -- in fact, now *I* am totally confused!!!
I was under the impression that you can definitely open a VS10 project within VS11 AND edit it. Forget about nesting project files within each other. Bitman just wanted to know if, with VS11 open and with an *empty* timeline, can he open and I assume continue editing (remember, he said he was lazy!
) the VS10 project. And for me at least, the answer is: yes, he can!

That is good news that it is backwards compatible, I know the vsp's are just command strings, but I was just a tad worried of some posts here and there on the forum mentioning the ommitting of certain transitions which are not supported in Vista, I assumed that these ommitments (if you would have been so unlucky to have used them and those commands driving these would have been present in the original vsp file) then this could jeopardize any backward compatebility.
I personally like to work with the Ulead videostudio (I have used edition 8 prior to edition 10+, I have not installed edition 11.5 yet to try it out, it is still nicely packed under our Christmass tree
Well that's not entirely true, I could not control myself and already took the booklet out.
By the way, since I do have the choise of dual boot (xp32 pro or vista64 ultimate) on my PC and not installed the vs11.5+ yet, which OS do you recommend? I am still a bit hesitating on which OS to install, altough I purposely bought it for Vista64 (were the 4G of memory could be a bonus)

To be on the safe side of things open the VS10 saved project in VS11 and immediately save it under a new name and work on the newly named project.
This provides you with a safety net that if something fails to work correctly in VS11 then your original VS10 project is safe and you can always revert back to working on it with VS10.
