captured video dark when paused

I have been trying to sidestep the problem of having dark individual frames. Video looks great while playing but then... Yes I expect it is the interlacing but checking that off either way (in the preferences- capture tab) doesn't change anything. I suspect the problem might be the Dazzle Hollywood DV- bridge I'm using. The UVS preview screen is dark when I try analog straight thru and an image only appears when I have it do the analog-DV conversion. Is there another capture driver that is required (current = Ulead DirectShow). Any advice would be much appreciated.

I've noticed that too (with DV as the video source), and I think it is being caused by the hardware video overlay compensating for the different color and brightness settings between the computer monitor and a TV. The overlay is only used during video playback, so the compensation is only avilable then.
