Sound problems...

Post by theguy1991 »

I've got video and audio in the timeline and when I click the PROJECT button to play it there is no sound. But if I click the CLIP button the sound is there.

And what format and properties does the video have? And where did it come from and how was it captured? What editing have you done to it?

Please read the sticky at the top of this Board -- the one that says 'Read this before posting' -- and get back to us with the requested information so that we have some basis on which to offer advice.

It's an .avi file and I captured it through a USB cable through Ulead VS10. I used a sony minidv videocamera. I've not done any editing to it except I trimmed a little of the video.

If you have a mini DV camera, the only proper way of capturing high quality video from it is by using a Firewire connection (Sony will call it i-Link). I know that a USB cable will have come with the camera. All camera manufacturers do that and they never include a Firewire cable. The USB cable is usually only for transferring still photos taken by the camera, or at best, low quality streaming-type video.

Of course, you will also need a Firewire port on your computer too, but if you don't have one, a Firewire card is easy to buy and cheap. It will usually come with a cable too, but make sure you get the right cable -- it will have a small 4 pin plug on one end for the camera and a bigger 6 pin for the computer.

And when you capture, use DV/AVI. I suspect you have captured uncompressed AVI which is fairly difficult to manage, particularly size wise. Right click on one of the captured files within Video Studio, either in the timeline or in the Library pane, and copy down ALL its properties here.

If you capture via Firewire, though, you will be amazed at the difference...

Here are properties of video. I already know about the firewire stuff, but my camera's firewire connection doesn't work so I'm forced to use USB...

Where did you get that ffdshow Video Codec from?
Just a guess but I think it is probably the cause of your problem.

Please view Should I use ffdshow?

I got it from freecodecs.com or something like that because I couldn't download DivX.

I just downloaded DivX and still nothing. I think this is a Ulead problem because the sound works fine if I just play the CLIP, not the whole PROJECT.

Try disabling the ffdshow codec and use DV type 1 instead.
Not sure how you will get on using that USB cable - I soon learned to throw it in the bin and use firewire. Are you certain your firewire connection is broken and it wasn't a faulty cable or the card in the computer itself?

Any advice on how to do that? And I'm also positive that my firwire connection on the camera is broken because I've tried 2 different firwire cables and tried it on my old computer's firewire card and this brand new one's built in one.

The blue line is to indicate that the Video also contains audio.
Right click the clip on the time line and select [Split audio]
You will now see the blue line is no longer there but your audio is on its own track

I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with the video codecs because I also have this little mp3 sound effect on the timeline and once again if I press CLIP it plays the audio and if I press PROJECT there isn't any sound.

Sorry for this being so confusing...

VS doesn't deal well with certain kinds of mp3, so it could be that the audio mp3 codec used by ffdshow may be one of these. Try converting the soundtrack to .wav format and see if that works.
