Ulead Video Studio V9 Can it edit Hard drive camcorder files?

Anyone know the answer to this as I am thinking of upgrading from my old DV camcorder to an HD camcorder from JVC

It should be able to. Does the JVC HDD camcorder you have in mind, have Firewire? If not you should be able to use it like another mass storage device, and copy the video files from your camcorder to your PC hard-drive.

Another consideration is the format it records to. I would suspect at least MPEG2, and not DV (avi). It's possible for it to use a proprietary format, which VS9 may not recognize. VS just recently overcame some of the problems with the .MOD format.

What model are you considering?

Hi, many thanks. I am looking at the JVC Everio MG130 which I have been told records directly to MPEG format.I think it's MPEG4 but could be wrong. Just wasn't sure if Ulead Video Studio 9 could cope with these files and be able to edit them or if it could only deal with DV tapes and analogue input via a suitable card. I was trying not to have to upgrade the software to V11
My PC has an IEEE adapter and I think the camera connects via USB and is seen as an additional mass storage device as you say by the PC.

If it records to MPEG4, you will have big problems using VS9. In it's day there was a plug-in I can't recall if it was free to registered users, or you had to purchase it) released, to deal with the "new" MPEG4 codec.

So if it does, then you may not be able to use VS9, unless you have the MPEG4 plug-in.

Just looked the camcorder, and it does not use Firewire, but has USB and Composite Video output. It does record in MPEG2 format, so you're good to go there. VS9 can handle the MPEG2 codec.

One problem that you will run into is the camcorder records audio in Dolby, which VS9 needs the "expensive" at the time, and no longer available, AC-3 plug-in.

How long ago did you obtain VS9, and did you get the Dolby plug-in at the time?

Sorry, I edited my previous response, and also found that it records audio in Dolby 2-channel. That may be a problem with VS9. I currently don't have my VS9 installed, so I'm not certain on it.

Have you tried encoding a video, using Dolby audio, or inserting a video clip that was encoded using Dolby? Does it work?

Got the V9 about 18 months ago and not sure if it hs the plug in you're talking about. The alternatice camera I was looking at was the Sony SR32E.
