Creating A DVD

Post by Tick573 »

In the process of trying to create a DVD from a home video, I get an "Unspecified Error" with the number 5:00 or something similar in the lower left corner of the message box. I am using a trial version (2nd day). Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this error. I have a Dell XPS 2.4 ghz system, 2GB ram, and running OP System Windows Home XP SP2. The video came from my Sony Digital 8 camera and as I am new to this the segment was approximately 7 minutes long. I was trying to go directly to a DVD and not sure of the size to file was, but I assume the DVD format would be NTSC for playback on any standard DVD player. Any help will be appreciated. Thank You!

Welcome to the forums,

1. Make sure you have the most current DirectX drivers (dated Nov '07). You can get it HERE.

2. A Recommended Workflow has been developed to help guide you through the mine-field of video editing, as it pertains to Ulead's VideoStudio Programs. They can be viewed here:
Recommened WorkFlow for VideoStudio

Reference to the latter; Try creating your DVD compliant MPEG2 file first (Share>Create Video File). Then start a new project (just to clear the time line). Do not place anything in the time line, and go directly to Share>Create Disc. Now insert your newly created DVD Compliant MPEG2 file(s).

The video came from my Sony Digital 8 camera...
How is the camera connected to the computer? (Firewire?, etc?)
I was trying to go directly to a DVD...
If you are trying to go directly from the camera to DVD, that can be "difficult". It's better to capture to your hard drive first. Then Video Studio can "take its time" to do the format conversion and burn the DVD.

At this point, we don't know if you have a capture problem, a conversion problem, or a burning problem. Video Studio 11 has had problems "capturing" from some sources (mostly analog sources). I'm not sure if Digital 8 has been a problem, and I'm not sure if this problem has been fixed. Once you have an AVI/DV file on your hard drive, you should be able to make a DVD!
...not sure of the size to file was, but I assume the DVD format would be NTSC for playback on any standard DVD player.
The file-size of the DV data from you camera (or in an AVI/DV file) are not important. DV is less-compressed than DVD (MPEG-2). And of course, 7 minutes on a DVD is no problem.

If you are using an analogue 8mm tape in the Digital 8 so that the analogue tape will be converted to digital DV and sent via Firewire, then VS11 cannot capture it. It is a bug, and unfortunately not one which was fixed in the latest update patch for VS11.

Hi thank you for the prompt responses. To answer your questions. Yes, I was connected to my PC with a firewire connection. I did not make a DV/AVI file first, and will give it a try.

The tape I was using is a Sony brand Digital 8 tape. Unfortunately I will be out of town the next coupe of days and will have to try your suggestions in a couple days. Will provide feedback either way. Thank you again.
