Wintab
Tablet Products FAQ'S (item 7) wrote:Wintab is a standard set of programming APIs used by applications to get tablet inputs to your PC. An application can get the pen pressure value as well as other tablet buttons and x,y coordinates information by calling Wintab APIs. Tablet vendors must support Wintab, so that their tablets are compatible with all Wintab applications. Please refer to: http:\\www.pointing.com to get further information about Wintab compliant applications & tablets.
The following table lists some known Wintab compliant applications:
PhotoShop, Illustrator, CorelDraw, PhotoPaint, ArtDabbler, Painter Classic, Flash 4, Firework, FreeHand 9, Paint Shop Pro, PhotoImpact 5, MediaStudio Pro(Video Paint 6.0), Cadix Signature, LView Pro V2.85, Satori WebFX 2000, FineArt PenSoft/ICR.

Well, I use a WACOM Graphire3 tablet with PI 10 and 12. No problems.

OK, Heinz, can you remember what you did to enable your graphics tablet in e.g. PI 10? (Enabling my XP-pen tablet was the purpose of my question.)

Thanks.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Did it 3 times at least since I got it due to PC rebuilts/fresh OS installation.

Just installed the tablet with its drivers, that's all.

What happens when XP is running and you plug in your tablet? Does Win XP recognize it?

What does your Device Manager show? Any exclamation marks in Device Manager?

While you are in Device Manager, select the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and click on "Scan for hardware changes". Is your tablet listed there?

Thanks, Heinz, no, I wasn't looking for help on a hardware installation problem. Haven't installed the tablet yet (I'm on W2K) but I don't anticipate problems doing so. It's just that there is absolutely no reference to use of graphics tablets in the PI 11 doc and, after the rigmarole to get PI 11 seeing my recently-acquired very ordinary HP Scanner, I wondered whether there was something special I needed to do WRT the tablet.

It sounds as though it will be easy. Will comment back on how it fares.

cheers, Helen

On anything prior to Win XP it was, or could be, a nightmare to install new things. XP has made that a lot simpler. Too simple, I gather, for our good friend Mr. Bill Gates. He couldn't help himself but come up with a fresh nightmare called VISTA

I must admit, I never liked PI 11 much. Absolutely loved PI 10 and PI 12 didn't take long to get used to either. I never ran any of it on a Win2k machine though.

I wish you luck. If you run into problems, well, you know where we live now.

Well - it works flawlessly. I can see a whole new world waking up here - esp. for brush and outline tasks - once I get out of the habit of reaching for the mouse! This little gadge comes with its own mouse (besides the pen) but it seems a bit clunky compared to the pen or a real mouse.

I'm interested to know you hate PI 11. I've been using it for almost 2 yrs, having "graduated" from PI 4, which I really liked for its straightforward workflow. The cumbersome workflow is the worst thing about PI 11 (except for those infernal AVs!!) and the online documentation is a scandal. Still, I like what it can do on a good day....IF I could be convinced that PI 12 was an improvement, I would upgrade.

I've even *tried* to purchase the upgrade from Corel's online shop (CD + manual option, essential considering how many times I've had to reinstall PI 11) but finally a phone call to Corel's local customer support revealed that they won't sell the CD version outside the US. Cool, huh? Welcome to the world of software acquisition!

Thanks for your interest, Heinz. Hope you're getting some of that much-wanted rain down there. :) We had a sprinkle today with more coming tomorrow (but we still aren't allowed to water the garden, clean windows or wash cars!)

cheers,
Helen
