I am sitting here with an mpg file that is slightly too big to fit on a dvd. At least vs8 says so. It's about 4.6g. It was gotten by using the dvxcel.exe prog. I evidently didn't lower the encoding enough while grabbing it. It has the sound encoded as lpcm which I am told is fairly large. So if the sound could be reencoded it might fit.
Question: Since vs8 doesn't have the abillity to re-encode, how does one go about re-encoding just the sound portion to mp3 or ac3? And will the process continue to keep the video - audio synch proper?
Thanks for listening

Download DVD Shrink, use UVS to output your DVD project to a VIDEO_TS folder or ISO file, and let DVD Shrink process the output to fit on a DVD. It will create a new ISO file for you that you can then burn using UVS' CD/DVD Disk Image Burner.
MP3 is not a valid format for DVDs, and AC3 requires the purchase of the Dolby Digital addon. To use the latter, you would change the DVD project settings and change the Audio Compression setting to Dolby Digital.
Using DVD Shrink doesn't cost you a thing, and you will not be able to tell the difference between your original project and one recompressed to fit on one disk.

You know, I have dvdShrink. I kept looking at the fact that here I have an mpg but Shrink doesn't work with that so I can't use it. It never occurred to me to use it as you suggest. Thanks very much for the tip!!!

I don't have VS8, but I do have the older versions. You could potentially reencode the LPCM to MPEG audio for a smaller file size as well. Typically though that's where you would run into an AV sync problem.
DVD shrink is the quick and dirty fix for you. It will also ensure that it will fit.
Also, in terms of "Shrinking" the MPEG files before authoring, you could give a program called Rejig a try. Its similar in concept to DVD Shrink but works on MPEGs. As a quick test, to me 90% looked decent, 80% was OK but noticeable and 70% was horrible. With Rejig you have to know what size is needed.
BTW, I assume this is the Dazzle capture since you mentioned DVXcel. How did it work out for you? Did you try the mods?
