Enabling dual core processor in MSP

Post by zoobie »

I found this quote on the net about enabling dual core processing in MSP
In order to enable dual processor support in MS Pro you have to add the following line to the [VIODRIVER] section of the msp.ini file located under 'All Users', 'ForceWriteThreadMode=1'
I enabled it for my new dual core AMD but didn't notice any difference when editing.

Comments?

No info has been publiished AFAIK, but I understand that MSP8 is automatically enabled if HT or dual processors are present, so I assume it also applies to dual core processors. In which case, it would make no difference. You can check with a 3-finger salute and choose performance. For the CPU, there are 2 graphs with HT/dualies/dualcore. If, when encoding/rendering, one of the graphs stays obstinately at zero, then it is not using both cores. OTOH if the sum of the usage of both approaches or exceeds 100% then you know that everything is OK (don't expect 200%, because it is throttled back to prevent crashing!).

This software has been engineered for the Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology for an outstanding home entertainment experience.
Wikipedia wrote:Hyper-threading, officially called Hyper-Threading Technology (HTT), is Intel's trademark for their implementation of the simultaneous multithreading technology on the Pentium 4 microarchitecture. It is a more advanced form of Super-threading that debuted in U.S. patent 4,847,755 (Gordon Morrison, et. al) and can be seen in use on the Intel Xeon processors and was later added to Pentium 4 processors. The technology improves processor performance under certain workloads by providing useful work for execution units that would otherwise be idle, for example during a cache miss. A Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading enabled is treated by the operating system as two processors instead of one.

Well, we need a recommendation for an editor that runs best on AMD then. :)

And what graphs do you have under Performance?
