Edit MPG file extracted from Nero Reencoded disc

Post by deklerkt »

I had some MPG movies, made a DVD using DVD Workshop. Turned out it was just a bit too big to fit on a DVD. So I shrank it (just a bit) to fit using Nero Reencode 2.
Now I needed to extract one of the movies for something else. So I tried to rip that title back to disc as MPG. Whether using DVD Workshop, MovieFactory - both just hang. Using SmartRipper I can rip the title. Even play it using ShowViewer or PowerDVD. But when you try to import it into MSP or any other video editor than Womble, the program again hangs.
And no editor can really edit this title.

Does Nero Reencode make something that plays well but cannot be edited by violating some standards on MPG that all (Ulead) MPG editors choke on? Or are the Ulead editors just picky?

My only workaround currently is to simply play the disc and capture the part that I need - losing some quality in the process.

Any suggestion or workaround appreciated.

Seems you just answered your own question.. Unless you still have the source files...

No, the original source files are gone - the DVD is now my best source that I would like to reuse. But I found no way to do that other than re-capturing which looses some quality.

Some other experiments with a long film I Nero Recoded to fit a DVD and then tried to rip part of it gave no problems in MSP. So it is not clear to me what product introduced the apparent errors in my DVD file that makes ripping/editing impossible.

Firstly you haven't said which version of MSP you have, the way to import a DVD differs between MSP7 and MSP8.

Here's a clue....

What if you just copy the appropriate VOB file from the DVD and rename it to MPG, then edit that? The file will be called VTS_xx_y.VOB, where xx is a two-digit number with a leading zero, and y is a number starting with 1 and incrementing into a new file each time the video exceeds a gigabyte.

Renaming VOB>MPG works only with straightforward files. The moment you have some special item (optional subtitle, alternative sound track, some kinds of chapter, interactivity etc.) in the file, it won't work.

A similar problem was discussed in this thread in the VS forum last March.

The likely cause was explained by etech.

Is DVD Workshop capable of any of that stuff? That's what the OP originally used to make the disc.

If it were a ripped Hollywood title, I would not have suggested it.

Of course it is, at least the first 2 items.
