Backward compatibility of video studio v 11 plus

Post by haridaspal »

Can a project created in Videostudio v 11 plus (Trial version) be imported into Videostudio v 8?

No..not as far as I know. Don't even think any program would do that.

But, a backward compatibility would have been helpful, wouldn't it?

I don't agree with backward compatibility. Why would you want to revert to an older version?

I don't know of any software which will do what you ask. Why would it be a nice feature to have? What is the sense in getting the latest program to keep working in an older one.

The only time this makes sense is if the older version has features the new one doesn't, like MSP 7 which has CG Infinity and VideoPaint but MSP 8 doesn't.

Even then, I would start the project in MSP 7 and finish it off in MSP 8. Never done that though.

How, for instance, would VS8 deal with a VS11 project file which, for instance, said to insert Chapter points here, here and here in Editing mode when VS8 did not have such things? There are also other features of VS which are in recent versions but not in 8 which would behave the same way, Dolby audio being but one of them (especially if you did not obtain the Dolby plug-in which was used in VS8 and is no longer available).

The reason I posted the question was that I have Ulead videostudio v 8.
I recently downloaded the trial version v 11 plus. I found v 11 plus to be good and created a project in it. But, may be because it is the trial version, certain features, notably Add Chapter and Menus are not fully functional and these are fairly essential in a DVD. I therefore wanted to transfer the project to the earlier version which is fully functional. Otherwise I would have to re-do the project all over again. I therefore felt that if the version 11 had an option to save in an earlier version format, that would have been helpful or a patch for Videostudio 8 perhaps.
MS Powerpoint allows that, though obviously it is not for video editing.

I see what you're thinking. Word processors, like MS Word has the ability to save documents in an earlier version format. Nice for word processing, however video editing is much more complex, so having that feature is not feasible.

This user makes a great point. It's my learned experience that ALL new software should read older "offspring". Just great business experience. In an "american califorinian tone of voice" "dude".."come on..get with it"..

Any software, I my humble opinion, should be able to read the previous version. That is what "Object Oriented Programming" is all about.

And Video Studio CAN read the older versions' project files. But the OP was not after that. He wanted the reverse, with the older programs being able to read the newer programs' project files...

haridaspal,

VS11 allows you to save your project to the 2 previous releases of VS.
So you can save your project to VideoStudio Version 9 or Version 10.

In VS11+ you can easily encode your video to mpeg or dv.avi video and then insert that video into VS8.
"Share -> Create Video File -> etc" (this is the best method anyway)

Please make a note that the "ADD Chapters & other functions" you mentioned that don't work should work on the VS11+ trial version.
IF they don't work correctly then either your source videos are corrupt OR you need to install the latest distribution of Directx 9.0c dates November 2007.
The directx update is mandatory for VS11+ to work properly.
Going by your posts you are carrying the project over into the burning module. Simply goto "Share -> Create Video File" (Choose your dvd format to create a dvd compliant mpeg2 video file).
Then use that mpeg2 video file in VS8 "Create Disk" Module. In VS8 go directly to "Share -> Create Disk", insert the mpeg2 from VS11+, create your chapters & burn etc.

etech6355, you are wonderful. I just tried it on a short clip and it worked brilliantly. Fantastic.
Thanks a lot

Dear etech6355,

One more question. Wil this process (of converting a V 11 project to MPEG 2 and then opening it in Videostudio v8 and burning it on a disk) cause loss of quality?. I haven't burned it on a disk yet.

No it will not, since you are not recoding it. Just make sure in the burning module (Share>Create Disk) that you have the option Do not Convert DVD Compliant MPEG Files checked.
