Ideal MINIMUM system for working with AVCHD?
Moderator: Ken Berry
mwhdvm,
I ran across the same exact problem in Vista (your system specs say XP).
I even installed a few times on Vista. I have to think back now, because the end result was the program didn't have enough rights to write to this template file.
In Vista when I installed I had the User Access Control disabled. I re-enabled this and re-booted. Then installed VS11+ and could write to this file.
In the end the problem was the program didn't have the rights to write back to the file or directory, the file isn't marked read-only, it the assigned rights of either the directory of the file. This has something to do with windows ACL's (access control list).
I can't remember what file it was, maybe someone else knows what file(s)
I will have to find this directory & file(s).
Maybe tech support would know of this exact problem along with a fix. Others have posted this same problem before.

mwhdvm,
Read this thread, same exact problem.
Found this one by searching:
That was a weird one. In the "Ulead Videostudio\11.0" folder down under the "Application Data" folder, the file "MovieTem.dat" just happened to be set to read-only. I cleared that attribute and the feature started working.
Strange, as I didn't see any other files in there that were write-protected...
Original post reference thread :

Hope it works and fixes your problem, right click on the file & select 'Properties", make that file so it's not read-only anymore.
I will also boot into XP, find this file & post back to this thread where it's located.

OK, here is the file that's causing the problem -- MovieTem.dat --
You have to enable "Show Hidden Folders" to view the "Application Data" directory.
C:\Documents and Settings\Your_User_Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\11.0\MovieTem.dat
Right Click on the file, select Properties & clear the Read Only attributes.
Actually I think all these files in this directory should be writable and none marked read only.
Actually if you delete this whole directory when you launch VS and if this directory doesn't exist then VS will re-create a new directory.
A big thanks to user "gordonwd" for posting this find & fix.

My case is very frustrating. I unintalled everything and then reinstalled correctly. Every time I try to insert an AVCHD video to the timeline, or import from a mini CD, the program crashes. I now have the feeling that my computer can't handle such files. The weird thing is that the 3rd party software makes the conversion perfectly so I can work around my issue without having to run out and buy a new PC. So there is hope for those with old PC's like me. I upgraded my video card to an Nvidia 512 4x/8x API card, but it doesn't make much of a difference with my old Athlon processor.
The third party converter is called Elecard and can be found here: http://www.elecard.com/products/product ... dio-avchd/
To import the AVCHD videos, I use Sony's software which xfers them straight to my HD.

Dabitz,
What is the filename extension of these videos?
Are they MTS, M2T, M2TS or MPG?
Have you ever gotten VS11+ to import or insert any videos without crashing?
After the Sony Software transfers these videos to your harddisk, your saying that when you click on the video that the Sony software transferred and insert it the program crashes? Is this correct?Every time I try to insert an AVCHD video to the timeline

Correct... I xfer the "virgin" files M2TS to my HD, then within VS11.5+, when I either try to import such file into the timeline or import via AVCHD import from my mini-DVD's, the program crashes.
When trying to insert to the timeline the program dissappears with no error message. When trying to import from mini-dvd I get the typical program error message. I get to read the disc and see all individual cuts with the check boxes to select, when I try to check any of those boxes it freezes and then gives me the error message.
Import from regular DVD's works fine.

Dabitz,
I think you need to start out clean.
This is what I would do on my system.
First, remove all ulead products.
Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove -> "All your ulead products"
Reboot
Download & install the latest updates to Directx 9.0c dated November 2007.
Reboot
Open up your C:\
Goto Tools -> Folder Options -(click on) "View Tab"
Under the "View Tab" change the setting "Do not show hidden files and folders" to "Show hidden files and folders"
Run "Disk Cleanup"
Start -> Programs ->Accessories -> System Tools - Disk Cleanup
Manually remove the following directories:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your_User_Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems
Then install VS11+ Retail Original Version that you purchased, reboot.
Install the standard patch.
Install the HD-Add-On patch.
Reboot
Open VS11+, goto Preferences (F6 Hotkey),
Resampling quality = "BEST"
"Show Message when inserting first video clip into the Timeline" = check ON
Playback method: = "Instant Playback"
Instant Playback Target = "Preview Window"
Click "OK" & back to timeline
Exit VS11+
Restart VS11+, click on the Folder Icon above the timeline, select "Insert Video", try to insert a m2ts file.
Give this a shot and post back.
If you still receive an error after doing this then when posting back list any other video editing software, codec packs or dvd burning software that's installed on your system. It could be crashing trying to build a preview graph of the video (your Project Settings being either mpeg or avi), another codec conflicting, directx issue, video drivers or corrupted/changed windows system codecs.
Before troubleshooting any other software you must first have a good clean VS11+ installation.

I hate to reply to myself, but I found thread which might be the answer to my problem:

I'll try that tonight and report back so others can benefit.

etech: I changed that file to Read-Only as you prescribed above and it solved the Template problem. Thanks a million!
I just want to mention that the Sony "Picture Motion Browser" that comes with the Sony HDR-SR1 camera does a really nice job of easily converting AVCHD files to MPEG2 (and can do a batch convert of as many as you'd like - simply CTRL-click as many files as you like, then right click and choose "Convert to MPEG-2 and Save") to either High Quality Mode or Standard.
High Quality Mode comes out with these parameters:
720x480 16:9
29.970 frames/sec
9000kbs
Dolby Digital Audio 5.1, 48000Hz, 448kbps
I haven't tried Standard Conversion yet.
