Error caused by ulppmgr.dll
Hi all
I have got the new v11 Videostudio Plus with the power update and I am having problems with an error caused by ulppmgr.dll.
This problem only arises when I have saved my project and then closed the program, then the hard drive thrashes around for about 7 seconds and the error message comes up. This doe not happen all the time thankfully but only happens when the program has been running for sometime, say 15 minutes or more.
When I go to restart the program it then asks me if I want to recover the project and I have learnt to say no as it seems to recover a saved version of before I saved it thus it is the incorrect version, I jsut find the my last saved version and all is ok again.
Any ideas what this might be?
Thanks

Happens to me from time to time with v10+. It's been reported here many times, but no firm solution has ever been found. Althought it's annoying I just ignore it, since it doesn't effect my project.

Umm I guess its one of lifes mysteries that will eventually be solved, but not today as it seems!
I will ignore the error but when it happens to my last save and it screws it up its a bit more annoying then.
Thanks for the post back, maybe Ulead should come up with a program that does not suffer from all the errors people keep getting, I mean I feel like a guinea pig sometimes.

Hi tel33,
how did it come about that you know that it's a problem with ulPPMgr.dll?
Can you locate the file in the C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 11 folder? (or wherever you have VS installed) On my pc it shows as 28kb.
I wonder if the program is struggling to find the default directory for autosaving the project, or if there is insufficient space on that drive. I think the default value is for a project to be saved avery 10 minutes. You might try unchecking the auto save feature in Edit>Preferences in the "General" tab and see if that makes any difference.
In Spybot, you might also try enabling the "Teatimer" function and see if VS or any other programs are trying to do something odd.
Although it's easy to blame the problem on VS, the fact is that pc users can come up with an infinite number of strange pc configurations and software installs, which would be impossible for the VS developers to test for.

Hi there
Basically it told me it was the problem and as ulppmgr is a Ulead file then it belongs to the program and no other, I understand that software is fickle and other programs may cause problems but I never had this problem with v10, I rest my case on that.
Oh yes it is 28kb in size and the hard drive has 350gb free (Hardly full) and I have already tried switching off the auto save that does not work either but thanks for the suggestion, we must have been thinking along the same lines.
I will look for a solution and if I find it I will tell you, in the meantime I sadly wont use Spybots teatimer as it drove me up the wall with it keep telling me something has changed this and something has changed that, I nearly went mental!
Teatimer of course maybe a good program for some but just not for me.
I do use Spybot and that is a good program.
I think a PC should work ok as long as the people programming it make sure that it works ok, Vista is a prime example of a badly written program with more bugs in it that "I'm a celebrity get me out of here".
The programs are written then thrown to the public and we find the problems out for them, later they put out a service pack to sort out the problems found by the public, sadly that normally introduces more bugs but what the hell in three years time they will have to buy the newer improved version which is even more buggy and its then a merry go round.
I understand there are many PC and software configurations around and that is a basic problem of windows generally, anyone can write a program for it to a certain extent, why oh why dont they make it so programs can only run in themselves and the operating system not allow a rouge program to screw things up, but that takes money to sort sadly.
Life sucks really on the software front, I feel sorry for the coders really, they probably know its not ready but commerscail pressure makes the owners put it out anyway.
Oh well
Cheers

Teatimer use - just a temporary measure
I was only suggesting you try using teatimer as a temporary diagnostic measure. I don't enable it for regular use, but sometimes turn it on after loading new software just to keep an eye on things like programs trying to connect to the net for updating or other reasons. Once things settle down and I've disabled unwanted features in new programs, I turn teatimer off.
Since you're adamant that ulPPmgr.dll was the cause, I presume you had an error message specifically pointing to that file.
As a matter of interest, how many processes do you normally see running in Task Manager?

Have you checked to make sure you're computer isn't simply overheating.tel33 wrote:....... This doe not happen all the time thankfully but only happens when the program has been running for sometime, say 15 minutes or more......
Take the side panels off and check all the fans. make sure they are not clogged up with dust and fluff - check the processor heat sink to make sure that isn't blocked up either.

Will have a look at the number of process's but I shut all the ones that I dont need down so as to hopefully not interfere with Ulead, I make sure only the systems ones are running and even ten close others like unwanted bluetooth drivers down and auto updating programs etc too.
It also has the error when the pc process's are not shut down and the pc is left as it has booted up, I am going to try and make the pc clean boot with a starter program to see if I have missed anything, will let you know the result.
The quad cpu is not even stuggling to do anything, infact it only seems to use one processor most of the time and thats not taxed.
Regarding the overheating I am 100% sure its not that, it a new'ish pc (3 months ony) so dust should not be a problem, it is also off the floor and also has filters which are clean also, these have been checked, plus all other programs run ok and have no errors coming up.
The quad cpu is running at 35oC and the several temperature sensors give no indication of a problem at all
The pc has three fans running, one sucking at the bottom, one blowing at the top, plu the power supply fan. The quad cpu is also fan cooled and is not running a high temperature, the max I have seen is it 41oC
I was using v10 before this and this never cropped up until I installed v11 and the service pack, it did it before thge pack was installed by the way, I had hoped it might solve the problem but alas no.
I have uninstalled v11, removed all registry entries etc and re-installed but this problem stilll carries on.
I have updates the drivers also.
It seems like it only happens when I close the program down, as said in the other posts I thought it was saving the file which I suspect it is, the program shuts down, I hear the hard drive thrashing, I know then the error is then coming up, low and behold it pops after 15 seconds saying that ulppmger has caused a problem (Will get correct wording next time).
I am at a loss
Just been thinking it might be caused by a memory leak by the Uead program itself as it does not happen straight away only if it has been left a short while, I will look into this too.

Why are you using Smart Proxy? I thought that was only to help a pc with low resources, say in HD editing. In your case you've got plenty of resources and you're only doing SD editing. Have you tried not using Smart Proxy?tel33 wrote:DV in, using DV to edit (Using smart proxy) then encoded to DVD disc in MPEG 2
