Indiana Jones Style Traveling Map

Post by WaxonWaxov »

OK, go ahead and laugh at me.

I want to make a "traveling map" sequence like the ones in the Indiana Jones movies.

I have the map, so I can make a custom pan over the still image.

What's got me stumped is how to make the red line move across the map.

Hell, if it was an animated gif, I could just paint it in frame by frame, but that's now feasible with video.

Any thoughts?

You can use two maps on still images and then do a wipe transition between them - in the direction you are traveling. BTW, the second map should be highlighted with your travel path so that it becomes progressivlely visible as the wipe progresses. Flow-Wipe, side-wipe and diagonal-wipe transitions can be used and are quite quite effective if the travel route is mostly in one direction.

hmmmm... intertesting.

will I be able to save the result of that as a video then do a pan over it?

If so then that's the answer!

You can certainly save the sequence as a video file. I've never tried panning the result but that would permit you to use a much larger map and then pan and zoom different regions. Try it. Let us know how you make out.

there doesn't seem to be a pan and zoom option for video clips unless I'm missing something..... bummer.

any thoughts?

UVS9 has that function for video, but accessing it isn't as intuitive as for still images. For video, go to Video Filter -> Video Pan And Zoom.

according to VS 8 help, it seem that pan and zoom only applies to still images... bummer

By the way, the wipe from one image with the line to a second with it works great. Now if I could only zoom on it.

Couldn't you do the same thing with jpg still images?
Though it'd be a pretty tedious chore, I imagine.

Hi
Zoom
This may work
After making your ‘Indiana Jones Map’

1/ Select a position on the map to zoom to.
2/ Cut the clip using the scissors.
3/ Save the last frame in the first clip as ‘Save as still image’
3/ Drag the image thumbnail to the timeline between the two clips.
4/ Apply ‘Pan and zoom’ to the still image

Continue to next point on map and repeat..

A former fellow poster - Michael Santarossa has the tip for making the map on his website - have a look at this page :-

and scroll to the bottom.

John: 15 seconds at 30 frames per second equals 450 frames... yes, too tedious

Trevor: I don't think this will get the effect I want. I want a moving (growing) line over a map (moving video) and pan and zoom over the video just like a still image.

Brain: Thanks for the link. That guy's method will only produce a map that does not move with a moving line over it. I figured out how to do that earlier in the thread.

So I guess it's impossible to pan over a video clip. Maybe I sould try another peice of software. Any thoughts?

Ulad's MSP 7.0 (the VideoPaint Module) will do that type of line drawing. You would have to create a video with the line drawing, and then use that video in your project for the pan/zoom (you might be able to combine the two steps into one, but I think it would be easier to apply them separately).

Hi

Hi WaxonWaxov

Maybe I didn’t realise what you wanted but as an alternative:-

I assumed a growing coloured line down a road on a map charting your progress from the start of your journey to the end.(this i assumed you knew how to make)

At some points on that journey the video would stop and be replaced with a still image, where you can zoom in to the map for 10 secs or so, allowing you to see greater detail or add text, then zoom out, allowing the video to take over and the coloured line grows again.
This can be repeated as many times as you like through out the journey.

Just a Thought

If I think of a way to pan on video   :?: :?:
