Unable to record HD back to tape on Canon HV20

Post by Delcole »

In attempting to record back to tape from VS11.5+ (11.5.0157.2 plus) to my Canon HV20 camcorder I get the message 'Check the HDV/DV input'. I have recorded the project by firewire, then edited to the timeline the next step being 'Share' choosing HDV 1080i - 50i (transport stream), the project is rendered and then the message 'The video is recording to the HDV camcorder' appears but then after a pause the message 'Check the HDV/DV input' is shown. The recording of DV presents no problems whatever. The Canon helpdesk assure me that the camcorder is working ok but that is not receiving a signal via firewire.

I have searched the Support Forum and cannot find a similar problem. Can anybody help, please. Delcole. [/code]

I haven't tested writing back to tape yet.
I will try this.

I know that with SD mini DV cameras, many of those sold in Europe could export DV (i.e. send it to your computer) but had DV-in disabled for taxation/price reasons i.e. there is an extra tax on such cameras within the EU countries, so to be able to sell a cheaper model, DV-in disabled. I am thus wondering whether something similar applies to HDV/DV cameras...?

I suppose it would have to be documented in the camera's manual.

Ken,
Wow, never realized that. Tax this, Tax that, incredible, everyone gets a piece of the pie. To think they would put this in hardware.

For quite some time on this forum, a couple of years ago, we got repeated complaints from European users about the inability to export SD DV back to their mini DV cameras. The thing now is to conform whether it is still occurring with HDV/DV cameras...

Yes, cams that had dv-in enabled where considered to be vcr's by customs, thus had a different rate of import duty levied on them.

I'm not sure this is the problem though. I've not taken much notice, not owning an hdv cam, but I ahve seen lots of people querying why they can't send back to cam with these sort of models and it has something to do with the way the info is sent back, it has to be done in a specific manner and I think not all apps do it. Thi is all from memory so could be wrong :)

Unable to record back to tape on Canon HV20

Post by Delcole »

I have contacted the Canon helpdesk regarding the fact 'Has the HD record back to tape' been disabled' on the HV20 regarding tax purposes and am awaiting a reply from them. We had the same problems some years back with DV but then some clever chap invented the 'Widget'. Will post the reply, if any, I get from Canon.

If widgets have been banned, how is it that Vista comes with a desktop widget, having a clock and several other nuisance items?

C'mon Ron, Graham was obviously talking about camcorder widgets. Vista widgets are alive and well.

Absolutely all widgets have been banned, if you are caught using the vista widget then it is punishable with up to 5 years in the tower......

Unable to record HD back to tape on Canon HV20

Post by Delcole »

I have contacted Canon who confirm that the camcorder is enabled to received HD back to tape without problems. Obviously the HD output from VS11.5+ is incompatible and they suggest using another program. After waiting for the patches which I was hopeful would cure this problem and I feel very frustrated with the result. I did'nt mean to start a Widget rights or wrong discussion - I know that they are outlawed. Delcole.

I take it from your first post you can write DV back to tape.
I don't have a HV20 and don't know if there is anything in the cams setup that may need to be enabled to accept an in signal. I would think that the cam need to be in the HDV 1440 mode & not one of it's other recording modes.

I have a HC3, VS11+ with the patches writes back to tape, but not without some pauses, glitches. So on my end it's not working correctly.
This takes time to test since VS11+ needs to prepare the file ahead of time.
I'm pretty sure if I disable "SmartRender" when creating the export file then VS11+ works.

Your going to have to contact Tech Support.

Thanks a lot, etech6355, for the information - I am sure that I will have to contact 'tech help' in the end but will carry on experimenting for the time being. Best wishes, Delcole.
