Smart Check Mismatch
Smart Check Mismatch
Hi Guys
I just ran ran the Smart Check and found the project settings were different to my clips. It is something I do not recall before.
My settings are 48,000 KHz, 16 bits, stereo but the clips are showing DV Audio PAL 32.000 KHz, 12 bits, Stereo. I unload them always as DV Type 1 and my project settings are DV type 1 so I'm not quite sure why they are different.
Should I set the template to 32,000KHz or let the Smart Check upgrade them to 48,000KHz (am I overlooking something at the capture stage - i.e. is there a setting I should change)? If I've overlooked this mismatch in earlier projects, would it have had a significant impact on my movies? (I'm not the world's brightest on these technical aspects, so apols if the answer is obvious.)
For info, my full project settings are:
PAL (25 fps)
Video tracks: 7
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

Thanks MrA.
I've always captured to DV Type1, so had the project settings set also to DV Type 1 as I thought they matched. Is that not the case?

I would recoment to change the settings of the camera.
Usually if you record with the lower quality settings you have the "benefit" to be able to record a second audio. But this is useful only if you want to cut your videos on the camera. Since you are working with MSP its unlikly you will ever do that. So you could record with better quality without additional costs.
As far as I know from the project settings only the mode avi / mpeg is really important for the quality and comfort. The finaly conversion takes place when you create your output video and this is the point where you should set the right options.

I have to agree with Helge. When "capturing" DV-Avi the data is just transferred from the camera to the PC, not captured as such. Capturing would mean some form of encoding to take place during transfer. With DV-Avi, be it type 1 or type 2, the data is transferred as is.
You need to set your camera to record at 48,000 kHz, 16 bit. As far as I know, DVD standard does not allow for 32 kHz, 12 bit sound and the recoding can cause a lot of problems like clicks in the sound etc.
It's best to use Audacity or other audio editor to re sample the sound to 48 kHz, 16 bit.

If editing with MSP, I would not recommend type 2. MSP works fine with type 1. These parameters are set when transferring to the PC, not on the camera though.
48 kHz, 16 bit will be best format for the camera to record in.
I agree with MrA that the project properties should be changed for this project but, AFAIK, when creating the video file for authoring the DVD, a re sampling will take place in any case because DVD standard does not support 32 kHz, 12 bit audio.

Well, no - you should set it to 32 KHz or 32,000 Hz
As everyone else has said, change the camera settings for your next shoot, though, and set the project audio to 48 KHz
Using DV type 2 is no big deal - it actually helps in certain circumstances (such as output to older transcoders like Ligos LSX or playback in Windows Media Player) but it's an extra step that's usually unnecessary.
Sorry, but your cam does not load up as type 2. There are no types at the level of the camera: the choice is made in the capture software ONLY and you can set it to either, as you wish. For some reason, MSP8 defaults to type 2, but you can set it to type 1.

Yes, I stand corrected. I was wondering why the properties say type 2 in MSP.Devil wrote:Sorry, but your cam does not load up as type 2. Thanks everyone for your advice.
Somehow or other my camera's audio setting was bumped down from 48k 16bit to 32k 12 bit. How or why, I have no idea but it obviously happened a couple of shoots ago on checking out my clips. Maybe that's one of the reasons I had some of the problems with editing, which I've been asking your advice on.
Anyway, I've re-set my project settings to 32k, 12 bits for this current project and re-set my camera to 48k, 16 bit. I hope I don't get too many problems authoring the DVD later.
Thanks again all.
