Help With HDV Capture Problem

Post by maximus01can »

Howdy,

I've been using VS9 for some time now, but my sony DCRPC9 DV camcorder was stolen when on vacation and I had to purchase a new camcorder. After quite a bit of head scratching and investigation I choose the Sony HDR-HC7 and felt I probably needed to upgraded to VS11+ to get the HDV onto disc. I downloaded the upgrade, installed and everything looks similar, but I have a problem when I go to capture, VS11 will run the camcorder, but I can't see anything in the video window as it's playing. It shows the time ticking away, but no picture. I'm sure it's some type of setting that's not correct, but it seems as though I'm a newbie again with HD. Is there a quick soloution for this and can you direct me to a tutorial of some kind regarding the new process of capturing with HDV. Do you still capture as AVI like the old days of DV>Edit>Make MPG>DVD? or is there a simpler process now to follow with the same high quality results. I'm still using a bit of a dinosaur with my old Dell P4 1.8 Ghz and 1Gb Ram. I'm also connecting using firewire just like before. VS11+ also seems to be hanging when I try and go into tools or maneuver around the tabs once in the capture tab. May be in others as well, just started looking at this, but it seems to be hanging an awful lot. Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers,
Max

Max,
Make sure to download & install the patches for VS11+, they are very important. Many had capturing problems, mine is working now with these patches installed.

Great choice, the HC7 shoots great video.
I would suggest only using the Sony tapes in the unit. I have a Sony HC3, had trouble with dropouts using other brands. After switching to the Sony HDV tapes or the Sony Premium (blue wrapper). I haven't had any problems. That cam is expensive & don't suggest mixing tapes. I got my information straight from people that have returned their sony cams for repair from sony techs. Don't mix tapes, use Sony tapes.

I shoot all my recordings in the HDV mode.
When capturing I have a choice in what mode to capture. HDV or DV. To capture straight DV I put the Sony cam into the Downconvert mode HDV->DV. The recorded HDV video is downconverted in the cam to DV and output via the firewire port as standard definitiion DV .

2 Choices for capturing.
In VS11+ capturing screen if you capture in the HighDef mode the settings is MPEG as the Format. There are no other selections.
In VS11+ capturing screen if you capture in the SD mode then it's DV.

When you capture in the HighDef mode this is called HDV, the captured video is in mpeg2 format.
Properties are
FrameSize = 1440x1080
Framerate = NTSC-29.97fps / PAL - 25fps
DataRate = 25,000kbs (25MBS)
Fielding = Upper Field First
Audio = Mpeg Audio, 48khz Stereo at 384kbs

Figure about 200kBytes per Minute of capturing.

Another capture program to use external to VS11+ is HDVSplit
HDVSplit captures in the Transport Stream Format.

Native format on the tape is TS (transport stream) format (extension of .m2t
VideoStudio when capturing converts the mpeg2 from TS to PS (program stream) format.

Your computer specs are a little below what recommended for HDV editing.
I would use HDVSplit to capture with because it uses very little cpu usage.

Thanks etech, I didn't download any patches etc. so that may be the problem. I'm guessing they're available from the ulead website so I'll check there. If not can you direct me to the right location. It looks like you have described when I do try and capture, only mpeg format when capturing HDV was available. Now do I use those same settings for project preferences etc. Once I've got the video captured I'm okay with all the editing etc. as it will be the same as doing straight dv, but I'm going to be a little unsure of what to do going forward. Can I still follow Ken's tutorials or are there guides directed more towards capturing, editing and making HDV and then making the HDDVD from there on in. Thanks in advance for the info.

Hi,
You can download the patches to VS11+ here

VideoStudio 11+ patches
http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp.htm get both of them.
Install the 2nd link first, the standard patch.
Then you can install the HD-AddOn Powerpack after the patch.

First, under Preferences make Render or Quality = BEST
Yes, always make your project settings.equal to your source videos.
Then after you are done editing create a new compliant HDV file.
Share -> Create Video File -> Same As Project Settings.

To burn this to a DVD in HD-DVD format for playback on a Toshiba HighDef player then start a new project, go direct to Share -> Create Disk -> HD-DVD.
In the HD-DVD burning module make your project settings again equal to the source, insert your rendered HDV file, make chapters, menus & burn. You can also change the audio from Mpeg to Dolby in this module via the Project Settings under the GEAR icon. Click on the GEAR Icon -> Change Mpeg Settings -> Customize.

You want to go into the Burning module from an empty timeline so your video doesn't get re-encoded again. You then insert the compliant media into the timeline of the burning module.

Thanks Again Etech,

I'll download the patches and then see if I can see the video while in the capture mode. If not I'll be back. I'm guessing I'll probably be back again regardless as this will be a bit of a learning curve with the HDV format stuff.

I forgot to mention the first time I use VS11+ I put the cam into the downconvert mode and first capture DV.
Then I switch the cam into HDV mode.

The first time you go to capture it will take VS11+ about 30 seconds detect & setup the cam. After everything is stable then hit play on the screen or the cam. It should all work.

If you can capture DV and cannot capture HDV mpeg2 without problems your computer is to slow for HDV. Then try HDVSplit.
I think your somewhat under powered for the hdmpeg2 / HDV Video.

Still having a few problems

Thanks etech,

I downloaded the patches and instqlled them in the order instructed by Ken in his sticky. I then restarted and fired up the program and all seemed well. Had the .2 PLUS in rev number. I think I will start using HDV Split as it did seem to be acting up. I could control the camcorder stop, play etc., but couldn't see the picture, kept freezing etc., but then once I fired up for about the 4th time, went into the capture screen and then turned on the camcorder and it seen the camcorder and asked if I wanted to use this device. I accepted and the video appeared on the screen and I captured a 3 min. clip to test out. The video appearing in the screen was more miss than hit though so it may be my box is a little too slow for that. What I did notice also was that I could play the individual captures fine, but did a few little modifications on the project, and when I try to run the project instead of the individual clips it's real jerky and skips so maybe that's also an indication I don't have enough power for this program. I never had any problem as you indicated with DV, but maybe HDV is just a little too much for the old girl. Will the video render out okay even though the project in the timeline plays back choppy? One other thing is I do have a problem since I installed the patches and that is all my audio has disappeared. It was there initially when I captured the first bit of video, but since it has disappeared. There is no audio on anything, my musice files using WMP, windows log on sound, VS11 nothing.........do you have any idea on that one? Well that's long winded enough, any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Max

I don't know about the audio, maybe check your mixer settings.

I think your machine is to slow for HDV video. Most companies recommend at least a P4 - 3 Ghz. I've gotten away using a 2.8Ghz with fast harddisks, fast video card on an ASUS motherboard. That's also a HyperThreading processor, my 2.8Ghz laptop cannot actually capture being single core & laptops have slow harddisks. (New laptops are using fast sata drives now).

One other glitch, I've noticed and I don't even know if it's a glitch, but Autoplay starts looking through my external HD during the course of the render and I'm not sure why. I have the autoplay turned off in my preferences.
