Edit multiple projects on the timeline

Post by dazzler2 »

Hi,
Can I edit multiple projects on the same timeline in VS9, or any other flavour of VS? If so, how can I do it?

I'm not sure I follow what you mean.

Are you meaning you want to import multiple VSP files onto the one timeline?

It is possible I believe (have never tried it) but I want to ask why would you want to do that?

My understanding is that you can import vsp files into a new open project and use them as completed video files. But, despite that, I believe you cannot actually edit those other projects within the new project.

Thanks for the fast replies folks,

I am doing a video with multiple subjects (projects), each being a different potential new bridge location in our town.

After each project has been separately edited, I want to combine them all into a single video on the same timeline to compare the different sites and hopefully determine which site is better. I'll then create a DVD and offer to have a public video showing for people to have a better understanding of the impact of each site. "A picture is worth a thousand words" they say.

I could of course create an avi of each project and sequentially place all the avi files on the same timeline, however, if they don't look quite right (titling, overlays etc.) then they could be hard to edit and correct. I've run into this before.

So I'm hoping that with all the projects put on the same timeline as .vsp files in proper order, if something looks amiss then I can still correct it. Also this method allows me to both save time and also save the considerable disk space that the various avi files would consume.

Therefore, can multiple project .vsp files be placed on the same timeline, be edited and then output in the "Create Disk" step as a DVD?

Thanks,

Hi again ... a few minutes later,

IT WORKS! It WORKS!

I opened a project in the storyboard mode and of course each clip appears in a separate box.

Next I opened the folder containing another project .vsp file and copied a project file.

Then I went back to the storyboard display and used "Insert Video" to effectively paste it at the end of the first video. The newly inserted video appeared all constrained within the last box (rather than displaying a box for each clip like the first video).

HOWEVER... When viewed in Timeline mode, each clip of each project file was separately visible.

When I tried to play the compound projects, it did its usual rendering and then played the compound projects normally.

I have not tried to edit the compound projects yet or even to save them as a compound file, however it works this far and I don't see any reason why it would prevent me from editing, saving or creating a disk.

I forsee this leading to a great simplification of work flow by working with smaller projects, saving editing time, saving disk space and retaining the ability to edit right up to the last minute before using CREATE DISK.

P.S. I can't remember but does the final project file from which you use to procede to the CREATE DISK step remain intact after you have created the disk? If so, this allows for a fall-back position if things don't go right in the CREATE DISK step.

As I already said, I am 99% sure you cannot edit a project which is embedded in another project. But let us know if you find a way!

Once you have finished editing, simply Save the project, then go to Share > Create Disc.

No, you can't edit a nested project (a VSP within a VSP). However, you can go back and edit the original. Then, when you go back to the nested VSP, it will tell you it has changed and needs to be re-linked. All you have to do is re-link the nested VSP.
