Hi Skier-Hughes, took your advice and just pressed on. I had a lot to learn and it has been quite traumatic ! nearly 2 days to edit/sound dub and hopefully save correctly. Anyway I crashed around the share/burning area and managed to make a 25 min DVD, (took nearly an hour to burn?)my very first one !
So, the missing clip sound/only left channel problem has not spoilt the DVD, prhaps I am only listening to left track but it's a start, still open to any ideas where the right/clip sound has gone ! SS2

I suspect 12 bit recording.

When you have some free time, look out the instruction manual, check youhave 16 bit recording for audio enabled and do a small test piece.

The manual for my Canon XM2 shows that in the 12 bit mode ST1, ST2 and MIX are the audio output options.
ST1 selects the original stereo 12 bit audio.
ST2 selects the stereo audio dubbed on later using the remaining 4 bits.
MIX is the combination of the two.

In fact there are two MIX modes, Fixed gives an equal mix and Variable allows the balance between ST1 and ST2 to be adjusted.

On this camera the 12 bit mode is definitely stereo.

I cannot think of any reason why a camera set to 12 bits would record on one channel only and leave the remaining 4 bits of that channel and all 16 bits of the other for subsequent dubbing.

Hi guys, thanks for the interesting comments. I reckon my Panasonic is the same as the Canon in ST1 ST2 mix, (but what a complicated number of options!)
But I think I am not the only user to have just used the camera in this default mode. As I have never messed with the menu options in 7 years. Perhaps the vid.heads are becoming worn and not downloading data consistantly? Whilst the Picture is stable, (no '5 bar gate' effect seen) It has seen over 150 tapes (never reused) through and only once, as a precaution before the wedding did I put a cleaning tape through.
Here's a thought. In doing lots of edits (thanks to Ski-Hughes!) I notice some 'clip mode' files have sound playing !!! some not ???.
As the problem footage came from 3 cameras at the wedding, I will need to unravel the files to see if there any clues why. Nevertheless, none of the clips will show sound in the right channel whatever I have done so far. I do not know how to duplicate left sound to right, (duplicate seems for muting one channel to put other sound in it's place ? ) I will try later, to busy at moment praying my edits will not crash on burning !!!
