DELETING SMALL PORTIONS OF CLIPS

I new to the editing world. I've been playing around with the software and self teaching myself. I am having problems with cutting our a small portion of a clip. It seems like it should be so easy but I keep deleting the entire clip. Could someone please help me.

further down in the board. You probably just need to cut the clip and the delete the new cut clip?
