Oops! Sorry about missing that bit on the playback.

Looking at your workflow and all I can't really see any particular problem that would cause a great loss of quality other than the fact that you are going from HD to SD. Seems to me that the down conversion to SD is the point where it goes off the rails but I know that are others on the forum that are getting good results with HD to SD.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Hopefully someone else with the key to it all will come on.

Firstly I'd recommend you forget all about NTSC, as this is a totally different standard to PAL and anything uou do using consumer apps will make a terrible mess when converting PAL to NTSC.

Try to realise as well that SD tv is set to 720x576, you cannot get any better than this. Even widescreen is 576x480. You keep trying to make a foot equal 13" and you can't.

To the problem, can you describe how it looks, as to what makes it bad?

On your capture you have upper field first, then on your create you have lower field first. I'd start by changing this to top field first.

Thanks to all the inputs.

I tried again this weekend. This time I did not use the default template when creating video file. I chose custom and set the properties myself. Most notably is that I chose Frame-based (instead of Upper Field or Lower Field First) and Video rate of 9500 kbps.

The result is fantastic! It played beautifully in my 42" LCD TV. And, without the black bars too.

Again, thanks to all of you giving inputs to me.

Most notably is that I chose Frame-based ... It played beautifully in my 42" LCD TV.
That's because your TV probably has progressive scan and sees the Frame Based video as the same thing (a bit like a computer monitor in that regard). However, if you plan on distributing the DVD to friends and family, they would need to have a similar TV. Otherwise, they will have trouble playing a non-interlaced (i.e. not either Upper or Lower Field First) video back on a standard TV. They would have to play it on a computer.

But congratulations!

If only posters ANSWERED the questions

It's probably also because the video bitrate you chose was significantly higher than the bitrate you originally used - although you never did give the actual properties of your output - most significantly, the video bitrate. For all we know, you might have inadvertently selected SVCD instead of DVD.

I'm tempted to set up another forum account just to see how many times I can post in a thread without actually answering questions from people taking the time and trouble to help.

But that would be a waste of everyones time, though, wouldn't it!

Yes, especially yours.. :?

Other than that, I completely agree with you. We have had a few posters lately who, instead of answering the questions put to them, prefer to rephrase their question or keep asking along the same lines without giving any details.

I just have no time for these people anymore.

I agree. Those seeking help have to help themselves (and us) by supplying the requested info. If they don't do it on the second request I just move on.
