I'll have to look into Premiere Elements. :) I find the storyboard very helpful for getting a rough draft of my video completed but for fine tuning I really do need a program that won't shift my clips every time I delete one from the timeline.

So far I was thinking of just doing the rough draft in VS11 and then importing the project file to MSPro, I hear that they are supposed to be compatiable but I haven't had the chance to try it yet.

VS11+

Post by skyml »

Well, tried to edit with VS11.5+ WHAT A PEICE OF JUNK! Of course my point of comparison is MSP. Played with the VS11 sample project which looked cool but what a pain the a-- to work with. The only option when I "right clicked" on a clip was to adjust it's speed. No atributes, no replace with, no reverse, no moving path or overlay options. No filter or split options. The lack of tools and lake of customization within the VS interface is so frustrating! Such a limited and restrictive layout - why would any serious or semi-serious editor want to work with this?! And for the beginner - a program like this would never encourage me to grow or progress. And since MSP is apparently on the way out there is no where within Corel to go - that's like giving money away to the competitors. MSP is such an awesome program with so much present and future potential, what a loss if it's abandoned! (what a loss for letting it lay so long) That's nice that VS11 try's to pretend it can edit complex projects but with the tools and restrictions within the program how could anyone feel the creative freedom to focus on their work? Asking MSP users to help make VS better is just a waste of time - get back on the MSP bandwagon and make some money helping us make magic!

I'm not a pro-editor. VS11.5+ is more than enough power for me. I don;t need to do complicated things and I knew when I bought VS that it's a consumer level editing program.

At work I was sent on a Premier Pro 2 day course and while I thought it was amazing it way too much "stuff" for what I want to do at home.

I think if you look at the competition entries VS can do quite a lot for the home consumer editor.

While having more"stuff" like moving paths I would probably use I'm not that worried about not having them until I master the things I have to work with now on VS.

I like VS quite a lot. It suits me and my level of experience very well.

VS as Basic Editor

Post by skyml »

So Clevo clearly states that VS is good for him as a Basic editor.... why is Corel asking about making a pro version then? From this thread Corel will hopefully realize that VS is fine as a basic editor only and the only unanswered cries are from those editors that require more - mostly MSP editors who do not want thier future in VS (no matter how amped they make it) or by investing and learning another application and loosing what we find so appealing about MSP.

I guess there is a market out there especially those that have progressed or want to progress from VS. Or those looking for alternatives.

If a pro version came out I'll certainly look at it in the future as I am very happy with Ulead VS11.5+

VS as a basic editor

Post by skyml »

Yes there is a market, a very good one considering the advants in video technology. And there already is a product that users of VS could move into when they hit the limits that VS imposes... it's been around for over a decade and has evolved up until around 2006 when Ulead caved in and Corel took over. It's called Media Studio Pro and users of VS (as many other editing programs as well) would find MSP extremley powerfull yet easy to learn and use. The learning curve is even less for experienced VS users. The program works fine under Win XP but nothing has been done to migrate it to work with Vista and most who talk speak of it's ultimate doom with Corel at the helm which is an absolute shame for the migration to keep it running is well within reason and the need is clearly stated from it's broad base of existing users. I can't recall how many editors and editor wanna be's that I've turned on to MSP because of the power and freedom with simplicity it offered. Ever work on a project and ask "would'nt it be cool if I could do this?" and realize you couldn't because of the tools you were using? Well, MSP always gave me a way to do stuff I didn't realize I could do and that gave me an edge over everyone else in the field that has made a big difference. I tried repeating that on VS11 and what a disappointment. MSP offers so many options while VS is a shallow hole of dissapointment for those who like to have options. VS on Steroids is still VS and it's big brother MSP is already here, we just want to keep it and keep it fresh.

First of all, how do you know what a "pro" version of VS will be? Will it be "VS on steroids" or will it be a re-vamped MSP? Who knows.

What I do know is that MSP is no longer being supported by Corel. So why should I fork out the money and the time to learn it? If a new pro version is released I would certainly consider it. I would love to have some of the functionality of MSP, but I also want to know that problems will be addressed and future updates available. I know that's not happening with MSP.

Corel has never supported MSP, MSP came in the package deal from the Ulead failure (that's what I choose to call it) and Corel has so far failed to act on it or honestly respond about it. But here's the deal... Corel saw a market for a basic editor and wanted VS and the management seems blind on the idea that VS is all anyone really wants. They have an existing market for MSP that has faded with the lack of support but MSP is still there and still works (on XP and earlier systems only) and still blows away what anyone has offerd us in VS. When power users and users who like the freedom, flexibility and options that MSP offers cried out to Corel to keep MSP Corel responded by asking us how VS could be improved to to satisfy us rather then ask how they could make MSP better. If VS is redesigned to do What MSP already does then it will no longer be VS, it will be more like MSP with a different name. It's not just the tools or features but also the interface and how we interact with it. VS, as it is, is too restrictive and too limited. My fear is that Corel will put all their effort in adding complex features into an program that is already limited by design and will kill the ease and power that made editing fun in MSP. I've watched the progression of VS since it's begining and I'll tell you they keep trying to do more it something that was designed to do less. The sample video project that came with VS11.5+ is the example I started with.... complex overlays, cool special effects and title effects. Comparing that project in VS11.5+ to how I would do it in MSP8 I was confounded and pissed off at the limitations and restrictive ways that VS forced me to work. As to the future of MSP... I agree, no one should spend the investment in time or money in a product that by all counts is dead.... those of us that already have it are sure to keep it for at least 2 more years while the HD wars settle. Or biggest restriction is that we need to keep Win XP a while longer or at least have a dedicated XP video edit station to participate in our investment. If Corel were to update and support MSP then I would sell the world on what I have come to know as a great product for video production (The world was so good when Ulead Photo Impact, Cool 3D, DVDWS and MSP worked together - those days are slowly dieing and the best we've been offerd sends us back to the dark ages - might as well try to edit with chisel and stone).

I agree Lance. I think skyml is putting the cart wwwaaayyy before the horse. We have no idea what Corel has in its sights in regard to a Pro version. No sense comparing it to VS11 or complaining about what is or isn't in it until it is unveiled.

Library manager...

Post by mdekker »

Well, I'm actually pretty satisfied with how UVS 11.5 is now. The only thing I'm really annoyed about is the library "manager". No way to organize (manage) the library... you can add something to it, you can delete something from it, but arranging it to ones wished is not possible. A simple organize by alphabet would do for me, now if you have a lot of entries/folders in the library it gets quite confusing.
One other suggestion would be to deliver the next UVS as a multi-language installation (a la Pinnacle Studio). You'll never know if and when a Dutch version of UVS arrives (last one was 8, now all of a sudden at 11.5 there is one again) and spending another upgrade price just to get it in Dutch again is a bit too much :P

Post that in the Wish List thread, not the Pro thread.

Ability to increase filter windows to full screen and also the ability to detach and resize sections. Paths and fine adjustments at the current size are uncomfortable.
This is along my thoughts. Floating palates where each tool/window can be moved around the screen (like phototshop). True multi-monitor support.
Oh, and GPU off-load rendering. A nice 1 GB frame-buffer PCIe card should be able to give real-time HD rendering I think.

- More HD support. Why is the 5.1 audio editing only available with standard definition ?

-Use of all CPUs. Quad core CPUs are now very common and much cheaper. VS11+ doesn't use all the available resources.

-More AVCHD support. 70% of new HD camcorders are shipping with this format in 2008. We should be able to edit M2TS files and also output in the same format. File conversion is a terrible thing as far as quality goes.

- Create disk should be totally re-written. It's confusing and not always match the options available on "create file". The menu creation is pretty bad and should be more friendly. More templates, please.

-Use of a separate monitor for playback. Monitor should allow 16X9 and not 4X3 with black bars. Multi monitor support should be independent of the video card.

-VERY IMPORTANT: None of the consumer editors can perform the pulldown on 24P footage (removal of one frame every 6) recorded on HDV. What about VS Pro being the first ? Indy people will love you!!. Full support and eding of 24P would be a strong reason to pay few more bucks for the product.

-VS11 pro should have a better titler. Something like a dedicated pro titler program. Professioinal works require professional titling.

That's it.

Video studio prosumer version

Post by mplen2955 »

what i'd llike to see a prosumer version of video studio is:
- more, creative (professional) video filters
- to be able to lock the overlay tracks to each other and/or to the main video track (so that if you add video elements to the video track at the beginning you dont have to go in and re-sync all the overlay tracks to the video track)
- fade in/out with masking
