Sorry... I know we're not supposed to mention other products but after using Pinnacle Studio for some years, I decided to pick up MF6. Most of my work is with hi def and HD DVD, as is with this problem...
The smart render seems to be much faster than Pinnacle when the proper conditions are met.... EXCEPT... when adding a AC3 file to either the music or voice track.
I usually do my editing in Sony Vegas then export a MPG (with no audio) and 3 separate stereo WAV files to Pinnacle studio (pinnacle can't import AC3 so you have to import your AC3 as separate wav files). Studio seems to plug along at the same smart render rate with one wav file or 3... makes little difference. I can render a 40 minute timeline in about 15 minutes to HD DVD complete with DD5.1 sound.
MF6 is even faster as long as I stick to conventional audio. (MF6 is also capable of importing AC3 so instead of exporting separate wav files from Vegas, I simply export one AC3 file). But as soon as I import a AC3 file to MF6 and render... my render time jumps to about an hour (plus burning time).
Soooo.... the question is... is this drastic increase in render time normal... or a bug.... or somehow operator error?
Smart render falls apart when adding AC3 music track
Hi,
Certain things to know when using MF6+.
In MF6+ always make your Project Settings (Under the GEAR Icon) equal to your source videos or what you want your source videos converted to. This is normal procedure whether MF6+ smart renders or not.
Normally, when you insert a compliant file into MF6+ and you right-click on it and select "Media Properties" the true media properties of the file will be displayed. So if you view the properties of your m2v file before adding the audio you will a normal no-recompress screen.
Now add the audio to the file, return back to the timeline and again look at the properties. You will see a different display, these are the encoder settings that MF6 will re-render to. Take notice they are equal to your "Project Settings" that you setup under the GEAR Icon.
What I do is create custom templates under the "Disk Template Manager", then click on the GEAR Icon & assign one of my custom templates.
There is a difference between how MF6+ smart-renders Program Stream versus Transport Stream. Appears to me that TS does take longer.
Using your method IF the Project Settings equal both the video & audio settings of the source material the program is supposed to smart-render it. As you say Pinnacle seems to be doing this very fast and not re-rendering the video. In MF6+ as soon as you see "Converting Video" it is being rendered, whether smart-rendered I don't know, this would be based on time I would think Not being smart-rendered if the converting video is displayed.
It would be nice if MF6+ had a "Do not consider Mpeg Audio Compliant" for HD-DVD like it does for DVD's. If you go into the DVD authoring module you will see this feature under the GEAR Icon. It would be nice to have this also for HD-DVD.
Though i have to admit mpeg audio at 384kbs still sounds really good on my system. Sometimes I prefer the mpeg audio because my JVC amp will use all the 7.1 speakers better with it's settings.
But as far as I can tell MF6+ is re-encoding video when using your method, although I admit it's hard for me to always tell because HDV looks so good. I guess the only way to tell is how long the re-encoding process takes. But, if MF6+ is taking a very long time then I would double check & make sure the "Project Settings" match the video & audio properties of the source material.
Right now I use other methods to mux the video if they are in separate streams before inserting into MF6+.
To show how MF6+ can smart render fast insert some program stream HDV video into it, trim it down or multi-trim then use the "Fast Export" feature, it's like a file copy process, very fast.
I use AVIDEMUX2 & other programs to multiplex elementary streams.
Sometimes I feel mentioning other software is necessary to explain the problem or procedure one uses.

No problem! As far as I'm concerned, it's fine to "mention" other products as long as the main topic of discussion relates to the forum's-product.Sorry... I know we're not supposed to mention other products
Many of us use audio, video, and imaging programs from several different manufacturers. I frequently recommend other programs be used along with the Ulead/Coral programs, or in place of the Ulead/Corel programs for particular tasks.
The goal here isn't to push & promote the Corel products. The goal is to help each other.
