The DVD almost undoubtedly used Dolby audio and VS8 could not handle Dolby without an (expensive) plug-in which is no longer available. You could try a free AC-3 (Dolby) filter you can find if you do a search on videohelp.com. It will at least allow your to import and hear the Dolby audio, but will not encode out to Dolby i.e. you would have to use another codec such as LPCM or mpeg layer 2. However, I should note that I have not used this filter for several years, and it has changed since I used it, so I have no idea what it does any longer.
Other than that, though, the only other option is to upgrade to a program which can handle Dolby. In the Video Studio series, this started with VS9, and of course continued into the current version VS11/11+/11.5.
Please note that if you get any version of Video Studio which has SE in its name, it will not contain the Dolby codec.
