VideoStudio or DVD MovieFactory???

Post by kenjancef »

So... much to my embarassement, I had previously posted a topic asking if I should get VideoStudio or MediaStudio...

Well.... in my infinite wisdom, I didn't really check the name of the program I WANTED to have compared. Guess I just lost my mind...I usually do my homework first.

ANYWAY... what I REALLY wanted to ask about was if I should get VideoStudio or DVD MovieFactory, since all I really want to do is get my HD video from my Canon HV20 to DVD's to share with family.

I got quick and excellent replies, and I apologize for my stupidness....

THanks!!!!!!

Ken

ps. I guess I am just as confused about the VideoStudio updates as everyone else...

That's not easy to answer.
MovieFactory is easier to learn, VideoStudio has a learning curve, but VS is geared more for editing DV & HDV video.

I wouldn't install the trial versions, both versions have some problems, the patches fix these problems. Unless they have rewritten the trial versions and corrected the issues related to them. You would have to test this out.

To keep things simple my choice would be MF6+ with patch# 2 installed. You don't have to purchase the HD-Add-on pack to create HD-DVD's. Patch# 2 fixes many problems.
With MF6+ and Patch# 2 installed you can use HDVSplit to capture will, import the videos into MF6+ and burn a dvd that will play in the Toshiba HD-DVD players, the process is very fast, only the audio will be re-encoded (unless you edit the video).
If your new to this I think that MF6+ is easier to start with, MF6+ also has many extra features after you learn how to use it.

If you want to make standard dvd's this is also very easy to do in MF6+. The program will convert your original HDV video to standard definition. and burn a dvd with menu's etc.

And why do you ask the same question twice? :? Do you think you have a better chance to get an answer that way? I would think twice. Such behaviour might put people off and they don't look at all. I almost didn't

It all depends on what you want to achieve. Most people here, at least the serious ones, have both and a couple from different stables as well. It is virtually impossible to find a program which does it all. All this has been explained to you already when you asked MSP or VS. There the price was the major issue and,of course, functionality. VS 11+ would come out trumps in that one because it is a continuing product. MSP is not but it has a few things that are not present in VS.

Now you want to know DVD MF or VS. The answer is along the same lines but a bit different. You can't really compare the two. Both have their place and I would suggest to get both.

VS is an editor with some DVD authoring capabilities, DVD MF is a DVD authoring program with some editing capabilities. You have to decide. If you don't want to edit too much, just get your videos onto DVD disk, go for MF. If you do want to edit but don't want to get too fancy with menus etc., go for VS. If you want to edit your video files and create presentable DVD's with decent menu structure and functionality, get both. :)

I know what he means - last time he got mixed up and wanted to know if he should buy VideoStudio or MediaStudio. What he meant to ask was should he get VideoStudio or MovieFactory.

This is just my opinion, others may have different views.
MovieFactory is aimed at people who have no or little interest in editing.
They do not want to lets say cut out the adverts in a recorded TV program and just want to get it onto a DVD disc as quickly and with as little fuss as possible. These users are advised to opt for MovieFactory.

Other users want to delve a bit deeper and get rid of those adverts.
They may also want to add a few Steven Spielberg special effects like a picture in picture or multi screen.
These users are best advised to opt for VideoStudio - but bear in mind that it is a bit more complex than MovieFactory.

The next level of Video Editing is MediaStudio - far more complicated but more elaborate results. These users are likely to be doing Video Editing for a living rather than as a hobby.

This is of course just a simplistic comparison.

Hi,
I just read your post that Steve locked.

I think that MF6+ with patch# 2 & also buy & install the HD-ADDOn pack for MF6+ is your best choice.

You have both a hd-dvd & blu-ray player, that's nice. MF6+ will work nice in your case. You will have a few options on how to capture, burn & playback your high definition home videos.

Hope this helps,
