vista and .ufo files

so do I .... with a few more years ...
you can think I tried quite a lot of tests before (and after) submitting my problem here ...
Of course, I thought changing the name of .ufo files, but it's impossible to do whatever with .ufo files.
to resume :
1) the problem is with PI12 and Vista.
2) .ufo files seem to be completely inhibited
3) as soon as PI12 is uninstalled, there is no more inhibition ...

I've got a clue ...
The problem is with Windows Explorer
I can create, modify, delete ... any .ufo file with PI12 as long as I dont click on it within Windows Explorer ...
As soon as I click on it within Windows Explorer, it is inhibited
Restarting my computer desinhibit the .ufo files .... as well as uninstalling PI12 ...
Maybe these informations will help ... ?

Obviously we are clutching at straws here and it will be interesting if we can find a cure. I have the opinion it is a fault with Windows Vista.
Can you check the File Associations to see if they are (or rather appear) to be correct.

I guess that the file association is correct since when I double-click on a .ufo file (not yet inhibited ... if the file has been previously inhibited, nothing happens) within Windows Explorer, PI12 is launched ...
The main page of PI12 is opened ... and then : nothing happens ... (not even a timer) ...
The .ufo file is not opened
No other file can be opened
I've just to close PI12 !
...
Have you managed to produce the problem ?
Obviously, we have all some habits ... and one perticular habit may produce an event which will never happens with other users ...
I must say that I'm a great user of Windows Explorer with stands in the middle of my desk ...

Ok, next thing I would try is the Windows Vista System File Checker
After that I would check Windows Vista Event Viewer

vista and .ufo files
I have the exact same problem.
An additional input is that the same file on a network drive works just fine.
On the local drive the little preview on the bottom does not show the file picture. On the network drive (system running XP) the picture does show. up.
I really would like to see this problem solved.

I ran the sfc program ...
eveything is right ...
I keep having the problem
I think it is not just a problem with Vista : there must be some type of incompatibility between PI12 and Vista since when I unload PI12 I can normally manipulate .ufo files with Vista
And as long I do not click on a .ufo file within the Windows Explorer, I have no problem with PI12

It most likely is a compatibility issue between them. PI12 was released under WinXP, not Vista. Ulead provided a patch later on, to make it "Vista compatible" or certified as they call it.
In my opinion, a patch that is to make a program work with another OS, is just a small band-aid on the wound. The wound may heal, but then if pulled, bumped, or prodded wrong will re-open and bleed once again.
When Corel released VS11, it was designed to be Vista certified, from the start. Ulead/Corel have not released a full "Vista certified" image application yet.

I just bought a new Dell XPS notebook with Vista Business and had exactly the same problem as stated in this topic.
I copied all my backup files from an external hard drive onto the new notebook hard drive so that I could reformat the external, but when trying to copy the ufo files back to the external drive, nothing happened.
Could not copy, move or delete them or even open them. PI 12 would lock up when trying to open them and also when attempting to make a new image.
I had forgotten to install the patch and when I did apply the patch, everything now seems to be working perfectly.
I came here to look for a solution and found it. A big thanks to you guys!

I've been experiencing the same problems as described by yodepoil & Ormond Williams.
My History: I migrated PhotoImpact 12 & all of my UFO files from a WinXP desktop to a new Vista Ultimate desktop & installed the service pack. My first issue occurred when I tried to merge My Gallery.smp (which contains all of my custom tool settings) by "browsing" to the file. PI12 would lockup. The trick was to not click on the file in the browse window but rather just type "My Gallery.smp" in the file field & then click the Open button. Once loaded, I was able to use the gallery. However, I then began experiencing all of the same problems with opening, editing, deleting the UFO's that had been created on my WinXP desktop.
My Theory: I suspect the problem has something to do with the way a UFO file makes references to design attributes assigned to it from the EasyPallette. I've noticed that when I open a folder full of UFO's via PI12's File|Browse menu, some of the ufo thumbnails will be displayed with a thumbnail showing the actual design, while others will only show the PI12 default icon. Attempting to open those files displaying just the default icon always result in PI12 locking up. I believe that these UFO's contain objects that make reference to certain tools that make reference to other files such as a texture file. That texture file is no longer located in the same file location as it was under Windows XP therefore it cannot render the UFO. Occassionally, I'll get PI12 to actually prompt me with "To use some of the templates and images in EasyPallette and Component Designer, you may need to download and install the content packs. Or if you already have the files on your computer, please click browse to link the files."
Does this sound plausible?
