Have you tried playing the DVD Movies / Music with Windows Media Centre and if so does this problem exist in that program?

Do you have anything else running on your computer
Press these three keys together to bring up the Windows Task Manager
[Ctrl] [Alt] [Del]
How many running processes are there
What are the graphs showing on the performance tab for
CPU usage
PF Usage

the dvd's will no longer play in the media center application. they are now yellow pixelated screens with intermitten flashes of the movie with some sound

Did this occur as a result of installing WinDVD - how long ago did you install the program? If only recently perhaps using Windows System Restore to just before you installed WinDVD will rectify things.

I purchased and installed it a couple of weeks ago and the problem did not exist prior to that. I had been using windvd7 prior to that with no issues, other that the fact that I got a trial version ended display when I tried to use the version 7. I installed the purchased version 7 as an upgrade to the version 5 that came with the computer. O.ther than the fact that I have paid for the version 8 - I would go back to version 7 if it was not for the trial version ended screen that I should not be getting anyway

Yes I know what you mean but the first thing we must try and tackle is to get your system working again before we try and 'fix' things.
By fiddling around we might lose an available system restore point - if one still exists.

Better to start off with a working system than a broken one.

so you are suggesting that I complete a system restore back a couple of weeks ago.
