No sound on inserted VOB files

Post by partrg »

Hi, I'm using the 'insert media file to library' feature on VS 8 to import a DVD in Video_TS format. The files come down onto the timeline as MPEG, but there is no sound when I try to play the clip within VS8 or if I create any sort of video file within VS8. Funny thing is that the audio is in the mpg files that are created and lodged in my Ulead directory under My Documents during this import process!! So why can't I hear the sound within VS8 :? :?

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers

What format is the audio? If it's Dolby (AC3), VS8 requried an optional plug-in (no longer available). The Dolby codec is included with VS11.

That's great, thanks DVDDoug. Yes, it was AC3. Looks like I'll be upgrading to VS11. Seems strange though that the sound was in the MPGs that VS8 generated, but could play the sound within VS8 itself?

Cheers

Hi Gavin, this is not a solution to the problem, it is an explanation so you can further your understanding a little.
When VS imports the files it really is just copying what is on the disc. The only "special" feature of that is the ability to read through the vob structure to identify and copy the MPEGs.
To play back the MPEGs with sound requires the MPEG decoder and the AC-3 (Dolby) decoder. As you have discovered that earlier version of VS didn't have the AC-3 (Dolby) decoder. The result is pictures with no sound.

If you go to videohelp.com and do a search for "AC-3 filter", you can download a free plug-in which will allow you to play the captured Dolby audio. However, it will not -- as far as I am aware -- allow your to encode Dolby *out* i.e. in your editing, you have to use one of the other permissible audio formats i.e. LPCM or mpeg layer 2.

Ken,

I have VS 9 SE, and I have downloaded and installed the ac3 filter, but the sound still won't import to VS. Do I have to direct VS to the ac3 filter, and if so how?

Sorry. I haven't used that filter since VS8, when you simply installed it. And then I bought the Dolby plug-in for VS so didn't need it anymore. I know it has gone through quite a few revisions since then. Did you read the instructions that come with it?
