I use DVD MovieMaker 4.0 SE that came with my LG drive. I realize there are many programs out there that allow for image burning... but I'm in a phase where I resist installing a multitude of programs on my hard drive.
Was wondering if (or why) DVD Movie Maker 4.0 allows for the creation of an image file, but not the burning thereof.

That's easy to answer. MovieFactory is a DVD authoring program, not a disk burning program. You were given that for free with your hardware. You might find that there are a multitude of MF capabilities which are not included in a freebee SE version.
I have the full blown DVD MovieFactory 6+ but still use MF 5+ to create my images and use NERO to burn my images to disk. Why you asked? MF 6+ in the form that I have, is troublesome and the features it has over and above the features of MF 5+ are things I have no need for at present. NERO is more reliable in burning images to disk. Don't know why but, to me at least, it is a fact. I have burned a few DVD coasters from ISO images with MF 5+ but the same files burn perfectly with NERO.
It is good to resist the urge to install a multitude of programs but, when it comes to video/DVD work, one that does it all, reliably, on any hardware configuration out there is hard to come by. You will find that most senior members of this board are using a well chosen multitude of programs

I have Nero, but the darned thing - using the image burm feature - says I have the "wrong media". Wants me to remove the blank DVD-R I have in the drive and replace it with the CD-ROM.

I've got an LG GSA5160D and it came w/MF4SE too. I think my using Decrypter to burn MF' iso works, if not, then I think I use SUPER to convert the VOB's, then I think D' will burn them.
Wish I could be of more help, but I've had so many issues with MF', that I have countless pages of notes on workarounds (i.e.; using SUPER to convert MF captured Dobly videos to AVI or MPEG so as to get MF to burn).
