Capture with VS 8 from Canon MV20 DV (NTSC/PAL problem)

Post by teeniemusik »

Here is the problem:
While capturing (and also during the preview) the video is displayed distorted (like parts of 2 different films in one)
The capturing software continously gets the information that there is an incoming NTSC stream, but the data actually is PAL. That probably causes the distortion.

Configuration:
- Canon MV20 DV (PAL)
- VS7 (also tried: MS Movie Maker and STOIK Capturer)
- Windows XP (tried Media Center and SP2)
- ASUS Laptop (also tried: Dell X-300 Laptop)
(I am in Germany)

What I*ve already checked:
- Changing the Preferences to PAL does not work. There is still the *NTSC*-info.
- I also checked other capturing software with the same result.
- Using Windows Vista Home on an other ASUS Laptop worked fine. (Using Vista is not an option to me.)
- So I assume it is not the VS7 nor is it the Canon. Also I think it*s not the hardware that causes the problem.

Question:
Do you know of any solution here? Is there any settings in Windows XP that can cause VS7 to think the DV data is NTSC (although it is PAL)?
Maybe I am on a complete wrong way.

I appreciate your help on this.
thanks

Have you tried capturing from VS?

Your camera is a miniDV type. You should be able to capture from VS.

If your capture program is causing the problem than we have to try and eliminate it from the process.

What's the capture program? Other here may have experience using it and may offer a better solution.

Ummm, Clevo, did you read the title of the post? 'Capture with VS8'...

Mind you, that being said, the OP then went on to talk about using VS7.

But all that being said, given that it is not just VS7 (or 8?) that is causing the trouble, but the same thing happens with all the other programs the OP mentions, I suspect it is more likely a problem relating to the camera.

Are you absolutely certain it is a PAL model? Where was it bought?

Thanks for your replies.

Here is some more info:

> ...given that it is not just VS7 (or 8?)...

I*m sorry, I made a mistake. I used only VS8 (no VS7 involved).

> ...but the same thing happens with all the other programs the OP mentions, I suspect it is more likely a problem relating to the camera.

But the following combination worked fine: MS Vista Home / Camera / MS Movie Maker. So the camera should be OK (exept, if the MS program would correct any potential problem of the camera, which I don*t think)

>If your capture program is causing the problem than we have to try and eliminate it from the process.

That*s what I did: I tried VS8, MS Movie Maker and STOIK Capturer. All with the same problem on Windows XP.

My guess is:
The problem is related to a setting in Windows XP, that causes the Capturing program to *think*, that its NTSC what it is receiving.
But it is PAL, I am pretty sure and here are a few reasons:
- it is mentined on the camera *Panasonic MV 20 DV PAL*
- If I switch the Capturing software to NTSC the same problem appears. In fact this setting is of absolutely no influence to the info field (of the incoming data), it always says NTSC.
- I bought the camera in Germany in an official Panasonic shop.

Thanks for any more help.

OK. When you installed VS8, one of the initial steps in the installation process is that you are asked to indicate EITHER your country OR your television system. Which one did you choose? For what it is worth, I always fill in both with any Ulead product. First I select my country (Australia). But then I move down and also select PAL as my TV system. This fades out the country selection above, but you can see that Australia is still selected. So you might need to reinstall VS8 and try that method...

You might also want to try a small, free program called WinDV which you can download from windv.mourek.cz/ It specialises in DV capture and is easy to use.

I haven't seen one of these posts for ages.
Canon, like lots of other cam manufacturers use non-compliant IEEE1394 firmware in their camcorders.
When MS introduced SP2 they decided they would make a step closer to compliing with the IEEE1394 industry standards and this ment that some cams then wouldn't work. The MV20 being the most popular model affected.
Sony was the most popular brand, as they are so far off standard they don't even call it IEEE1394 but ilink :)

Anyway, this is what you want.
