AVI file plays fine on Windows Media Player but bad in ULEAD

Post by bob733 »

This is going to be kind of hard to explain but here goes.

I capture a Youtube video and it saves it to AVI. This file plays fine in Windows Media Player.

However, after importing it to the library and placing it in the top video time line, when I play Project, the clip is black and white. and the preview screens is displaying 2 frames, with a line between them and both black and white frames are leaning to the left.

If necessary I guess I can try to figure out how to get a picture of this bad description to you.

And another thing. If I play only the clip, in ULEAD, it plays fine.

So, there is something obviously amiss when these clips are played with the rest of the project.

Thanks as always

properties onthis one is divx 6.7 codec (2 logical cpus)

but i tried others.

I guess the question is... what and how should I record the clip with the screen capture program?

You never mentioned a screen capture program before giving the impression you had downloaded it.
Camtasia Studio by any chance?
In which case you have the TechSmith 'avi' codec.
Camtasia Studio provides a number of different 'shareable formats' after you have saved the capture.

Alternatively open the screen capture in VideoStudio then go to the share tab and create video file. I find the following custom settings work well for me
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 768 x 576, 25 fps
Frame-based
Indeo® video 5.10
15 Key frame rate:, 85% Quality
No Audio

Just be aware that if you are using Vista, the Indeo codec does not work with it.

Another reason why I asked you to do the above which you have not yet done.

Ok first. Steve, I have filled out the System info. Sorry it was not filled out before.... yes, yes I know I was lazy....what is new.

Second, as to the probelm. I have been running test with 3 different products.
Snagit (video capture function)
Camtasia (video capture)
ZDSoft Screen capture

The Snagit and Camtasia from TechSmith appeared to have the same capture engines. Camtasia had additional post edit capibilities but we have Ulead right. So, I dont need to buy a 200 dollar plus product.

I thought ZDSoft Screen Capture 39 bucks would do the trick and it appeard to be a little easier then Snagit (although Snag had a lot more functionlity).

But The zdsoft product is the one that does not play back right when you play it in Project mode. The color turns to black and white and there appear to be 2 frames (leaning to the left) on the screen at all times. I used the Tech Smiith codec for ZDSoft (as I alsd did with Snagit). Zdsoft plays perfectly in Clip playback mode.

Snagit performed as Snagit always does... good.

So, I sent an email to ZDSoft and told them about the problem with the product.
