VS 10.0.01.10.2Plus running on XP SP2 crashes after 99% completion when rendering in the Create Video File context. If I go to Create Disc the same happens at the file convertion stage. I was trying to render to PAL/DVD; the same happens if I select PAL MPEG2.
Editing was by way of avi and wav files and went very smoothly. Any suggestions?

Could be a corrupt file. You don't say if you are using a menu. Sometimes those can be problematic if you have overlapping buttons, etc.
More details from you would help.

I've added data to my profile. I didn't use a menu. The video track contains a few images as jpeg files - I thought they might be the problem so deleted them from a copy but, no dice, VS still fell over at the 99% mpeg convertion point. The error text file that the system wants to send to Microsoft is unintelligable to me - any use to you?

If I choose 'project settings' in Create Video File the rendering works OK and the resulting .avi file plays perfectly in Windows Media Player. I then open a new project, add the .avi file and start out on the Create Disc route it again falls over in the file convertion stage at the 99% point. Is this pointing to a flaky mpeg encoder?

Can you right click on one of the .avi files within Video Studio and copy down all of its properties here please. It is possible that you are using one of the highly compressed formats which use '.avi' as their container format such as DivX or XVid... VS sometimes has difficulty with these formats...

There is nothing in VS which should cause that particular operation to fall over. Going from DV to DVD compatible mpeg-2 is stock standard, and it should make no difference -- particularly on your computer (thanks for filling in the details!
) whether the original DV is Type 1 or 2 encoded. Most people here use Type 1, but I have used Type 2 for years and it has always worked.
There are two possibilities I can think of: (1) the DV, or one clip in it, has a corruption in it. This would be unusual but possible, and the fact that the conversion falls over right near the end suggests it might be one of the final clips in the project. You could experiment by taking out one or more of the final clips sequentially and try the conversion until your identify one clip which causes the problem. Then you might try capturing that part again just to see if the new capture has the corruption or not.
(2) Your suggestion about a flaky codec could have merit if you have installed any mega codec packs. That usually causes more trouble than it is worth as the codecs are usually just thrown together on the basis that more is better, and with little or no account taken of the possible conflicts between codecs which could be created. The mpeg encoder used by Video Studio is a Main Concept one, and is quite sound, especially for the type of operation you are trying to carry out.
Incidentally, the only way of inserting a screen shot is if you have access to either your own website or one of the public ones which allows uploads. You then upload your screenshot (suitably downsized so as not to swamp the screen) and post a link back here in the Board.

I took the 'resulting .avi' file and threw it at Nero 6 which transcoded it (to use Nero jargon) for PAL DVD with no problem at all and burnt to disc OK. This suggests that my data is OK and that VS is sensitive to something on my system. I've used VS since version 6 and this isn't the first time I've had to go elsewhere to get a film finished. Sonic's 'MyDVD' has come to the rescue in the past. A pity because I am impressed with VS's editing power which gets better with each release.
Thanks for the 'how to' on screenshots and for your guidance.

You will find that many on this forum use a multitude of programs to complete their projects.I've used VS since version 6 and this isn't the first time I've had to go elsewhere to get a film finished.
