WinDVD 8 HD/Blu-ray "Open File..." Problem

Post by clm3s »

I just purchase WinDVD 8 HD/BR and I got past the activation loop problem. It only runs properly once out of every three trys but when it does run I have a MAJOR issue with it that seems to be completely stupid...

Click the "Source" icon then "Open File..." - NOTHING HAPPENS!!!

The words "Open File.." are there but they are "greyed out".

A screen cap from WinDVD 8's own help file when trying to open an audio file for example....

WHAT GIVES? Why cant I play files like I was promised?

And your "D" drive is what?
I bet you say a CD/DVD drive and I bet it had no disc in it.

If you have something on one of your HARD DRIVE(s) then use the next option in the list which is not greyed out - [Open from folder...]

Well, my DVD drive is NOT a file, it is a disc. I want to open a FILE from my harddrive, A SINGLE FILE....

To be clear:

I DO NOT want to play a DVD at this moment.
It plays DVD's fine, that's not my issue I am having...

I DO NOT want to play DVD content from a folder.
It plays ripped DVD content from my harddrive just fine, but again, not the problem...

I DO want to play an MPG file, an WMV file.
I want to play my HD WMV, my MPG files and others, WHICH the "Open Folder" option WILL NOT OPEN.

My issue with WINDVD8:
I CANT open regular, plain old files because the OPEN FILE option is grey out and UNCLICKABLE.

I hope this clears up what I am saying...

Can you help now?

Like I said - it is looking at your "D" drive.
What is your "D" drive and does it contain anything.

I am NOT concerned with the "D" drive at the moment.

The "D" drive is My DVD drive, and it works just fine with WINDVD8.

At the time of that image, there was a DVD in the drive.

I took the DVD out and took another screen shot.

"Open File..." is STILL grey out and NOT CLICKABLE...

I'll join in this game, too.
When I run WinDVD 6 or 7 with no DVD in the drive, I have the option to open a file.
Yes, it does recognize that a D drive exists, and that there is nothing in it. But I can open other files.

CLM3S, I understood your question the first time out.
You are absolutely correct, "Open File" should not be grayed out.
What if, for example, you wanted to view a DivX file? That's how I select them. They supported that since at least 6 for DivX, and WinDVD4 for many other file types.

SJJ1805 (Admin) is simply not tech support. It's obvious he has no clue what you're asking-stop letting that frustrate you. Recognize that the site is user to user support, and not DeLorme tech support (it's in the disclaimer at the top of every post).

I did--I had to walk through half my own problem, and make several phone calls until someone at Corel researched the other half and got the answer right (there was some wrong-guessing along the way).

As a user-to-user, my advice is:
- Ignore SJJ1805. He obviously does not have any clue, and is tossing out red herrings (unless he can explain why he's asking and why he is not comprehending that an empty drive with no DVD in it means the DVD drive has nothing in it)
- Un-install
- Run a program like RegEdit (free) that lets you search the registry.
- Search and destroy all evidence of WinDVD.
- Search and selectively (if you have other programs) destroy all entries with "Corel" in them.
- Reboot.
- Reinstall.

Good luck. Let us know how it turned out. Corel did (at their main site/support) responded to email support, and I when referenced my post, they read it before replying. If you have to call them on the phone, I've gotten very quick response early in the morning, and always very courteous. When they say they'll get back to you, it took a few days, but they got back to me.

Thank you for your advice.

EDIT: I did find a "back door" way to play files through the PLAYLIST option in WINDVD8. What a pain to have to add a file to a playlist every time you want to play it though...

I may just ask for my money back, this is a seriously flawed product...
