How to splice clips together in VS11

Post by RDeFilippi »

I want to take several clips on the storyboard and splice them together. I have searched the help files that came with product, the FAQ's and this forum and no luck. Can some one help? I am a novice so go easy on me. :D

That's exactly what VS is for  Put all your clips into the story board and click Share to create a new video file, that's all :D

Going a step further - you can have them with or without transitions.
Without transitions is simply as Heinz as mentioned place them on the storyboard one after the other. This method is termed "Straight cuts"
If you want transitions, do the same as above but this time drag a transition from the library manager and drag it between the clips.

For further information please view:
From Camcorder to DVD with Video Studio
and also
From Camcorder to DVD with Video Studio - Editing Phase. - this one also contains a section Transitions

Thanks for the quick reply guys. My problem is that I converted a VHS tape to a DVD with a pioneer VHS to DVD deck. It separated pieces I would really like to join together in one continuous clip. How do I actually merge (splice) clips together?

Please read the above again

Hi Robert

When you view the timeline do you see separate boxes or a continuous film?

There are two views

1 / Storyboard
2 / Timeline view

It may be best to edit in Timeline View this shows a continuous film.
You can expand and contract the view, allowing you to see more or less frames.
Look for the zoom slider with the + & - signs.

On the Storyboard I see 8 separate clips and on the Timeline I see separate boxes. Again, I would like to take 2 or 3 of the speparte clips and splice them together just like splicing film so one continues seamlessly into the next - not a transition effect

That is a straight cut. One of the easiest taks that can be performed.
Just place the clips concerned in the boxes in storyboard view and then select the "Share" tab and create a new video.

Thanks so much for the information. I would like to say that Corel should make this more intuitive and I'm sure they can come up with a simple way of doing this. Also, it should be made clear in the help file how to do this since it is currently not in there. Again, thanks.

It can;t be made any more clear I think. It's pretty straight forward.

When you which between story board and timeline views you'll see how the two views present the information.

VS11+ is by far the easiest I have used

Whilst I agree with Clevo that the help file is clear, plus a visit to our
Forum Tutorials Threads will point users to a wealth of information including online video tutorials. I recently received an email from Corel which suggests that they are hoping to improve the included help files with future versions of VideoStudio.

Not clear at all

Post by OregonJohn »

It can't be made any more clear I think. It's pretty straight forward.
Apparently I can't do it, but joining two clips should be as easy as splitting one clip into two. That should be intuitive.

What it seems I must do is save my current project. put the two clips I want to join up into the "cataloged" area. Close my current project. Create a new project. Pull the two clips down into my new time line. Now, I must "share" the two clips as a new file. Now I can close my temporary project. Reopen my new project. Bring in the saved clip. Delete my two separate clips and place the newly joined clip into my time line for the project I'm working on.

How in the world is that intuitive?

You see, what has happened for me is that for some unknown reason a particular music performance got split into two pieces when capturing. Now I need to join them so they can be given a chapter title. That's what's not intuitive at all.

It's intuitive to me.... Especially in a Non-Linear Editor like VS.

It sounds like you may have split your original capture by scene. If that's the case why don't you recapture the video and uncheck "Split By Scene" That way you would have one long video again

Uhh... how can you not work this out?
you just drag the clips you want down to the time line next to each other and they are joined. Optionally drag a transition between them to have things like cross fades, slies, wipes and so on.

When you have finished ALL of your editing you create a new video from the share tab.
