VS11+ Vanishes When Authoring A DVD

Post by jkb458 »

Operating System: Windows XP SP2
Motherboard: ECS NFORCE4M-A
Graphic Card: GeForce 7300 GS 256 MB DDR2
Sound Card: onboard
Processor: AMD 5200
Hard Disk Drive: Maxtor 160 GB x2
Memory: 1 GB DDR2

Describe your problem: I have 8 MPEG2 files that I've created from mini-DV footage that I captured from my Panasonic PV-GS320 camcorder. I am attempting to author a DVD with all 8 mpg files. I can select the first 3 files and add them to the authoring window. However, when I click on the fourth file (not clicking Add, just 1 click on the filename to select it) and VS11+ vanishes. No error codes, no "Do you want to send a report to Microsoft", no nothing...

I've rebooted, same results. I've searched the forums and not come up with this issues specifically. I've attempted to select the files in a different order with the same results.

I've selected 2 MPEG-2 files and authored DVD's with no problems in the past. Just seems that I've hit some limit somewhere...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?):

All 8 files have same properties except file size and length.
MPEG-2 Lower field first
720 x 480, 16:9
29.970 fps
VBR (8Mbps max)

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?: None

Project Settings (important): No project, just attempting to author a DVD from 8 MPEG-2 files.

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD): DVD ISO image

PAL or NTSC: NTSC

Error Codes (if any): none

Product Version: VS11+

I have found the following review of your camcorder
panasonic-pv-gs320 from which I am able to see it is a Mini DV camcorder.
Therefore although you have said "Method of connection = none" in fact you should be using an IEEE1394 firewire cable. You should be 'capturing' in DV (avi) and NOT MPEG2.

To save you writing all of this out:
Operating System: Windows XP SP2
Motherboard: ECS NFORCE4M-A
Graphic Card: GeForce 7300 GS 256 MB DDR2
Sound Card: onboard
Processor: AMD 5200
Hard Disk Drive: Maxtor 160 GB x2
Memory: 1 GB DDR2

Please click here --> Image for instructions about how to complete your user profile so that we can then view your system specifications from that button. It will save you typing it all out again next time.

Hi, thanks for all that information.

I can't see what the problem is from the information you have given but I have a couple of questions. My camcorder is the Panasonic NV GS180.

When I capture from my camcorder the video file format is DV-AVI. I capture through firewire straight from VS11+

From the information you have given you seem to be converting the files to DVD compatable mpeg2 video files. Then editing. Do I have that correct?

Could I also ask what is your project duration is? I'm just trying to work out if you are working with huge file sizes. Also, are you running other applications in the background (virus scanners, start up progs etc). I noticed you have one gig of RAM.

We'll go from there depending on your answer.

Thanks

I'll update the profile, thanks for the tip!

OK, I am capturing from the camcorder as AVI files. And yes, I'm using an IEEE 1394 card to capture. I've edited while the files were AVI's. Next, I've created MPEG-2 files from each of the editing sessions in order to create a DVD from each of the 8 videos.

Side note: The videos are of my son's football games. I've been shooting the video each week and producing a video of each of the games. Now, at the end of the season, I'm trying to combine all 8 of the game videos into 1 DVD for each of the players.

What I was attempting to do was just go straight to the authoring phase since I already have 8 MPEG-2 files. I just wanted to put all 8 videos on the same disc (DVD). When I try to add the files to the author tool, VS11+ just vanishes on the 4th file being selected...

I don't have anything other than McAfee Virus Scan running in the background.

Does that clear things up a little?

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Jeff

Corrupt 4th file?
Try adding the rest missing that particular one out. If all goes well then either you need to recreate the 4th file or you could try running it through either Womble or VideoRedo which have tools to fix a broken MPEG file.

Steve,
He's already tried adding in different order so corruption may not be the issue.

Jeff,
One thing you haven't mentioned is tha actual size of the files. Can you let us know what they are?
Another possiblity could be a bad memory sector. There is a program called "memtest" that you can run to see. Just do a search on the net, it's free.

Reading it again it could still be a corrupt file. He said he has tried selecting the files in a different order - however when it crashes it could be the same file that causes the crash. He needs to clarify that point.

In other words is it always when a 4th file (any 4th file not a certain one)
or could it be when a particular one of the 8 is added?

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the responses!

Yes, I have varied the order of selecting the files and made sure that the 4th file is different each time. Still get the vanishing treatment.

I had already thought about the file being corrupted. I read here that a file can be corrupt even though it plays just fine. I still had all of the original AVI's on my HD so I just re-rendered the files. Still the same result.

File sizes:
File 1: 89.7 MB
File 2: 168 MB
File 3: 205 MB
File 4: 397 MB
File 5: 467 MB
File 6: 623 MB
File 7: 698 MB
File 8: 571 MB

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Well, I've been through everything in the T-shooting guide... Everything checks out OK.

So, I decided to just put all of the MPEG-2's together in Edit mode and then render out another MPEG-2 of all 8 files combined. Then, I created an ISO image after adding chapters for the beginning of each clip. I got what I needed, even though it bugs me that I can't figure out what's up with the file add feature in the create disc portion...

Thanks for all the help!!!
