Stopping 'snap to edges' on timeline - VS 11 Plus

At least I think thats what its called :?

Is there any way of turning off the feature where, when you cut a piece of video out of the timeline, everything to the right moves over and fills the gap thats left.

To give you an example of why I want to disable this feature I'll explain what I am doing:

I have a video of a wedding speech on the main track of the timeline.

I've seperated the audio from this clip.

On the first overlay track I have a 'second camera' clip of shots of the guests sitting at the tables listening to the speech.

So what I now want to do is cut certain parts of the main clip and insert clips of the room and guests every now and then - (the audio from clip (1) is to remain constant throughout)

To do this I need the gap to stay there when I cut and delete so that I know the exact size clip to insert, otherwise my audio will end up out of sync

I know there are work-arounds and other ways to achieve what I am trying to do but it would be so much easier if I could disable the feature.
I've used Adobe premiere 6 in the past and you could disable it in that.

Cheers,

Wayne

Short answer....Nope..

This is the correct behavior of the program. It eliminates the possibility of leaving blank spaces, or voids between clips.

VS is a not a pro-sumer or professional grade program, like Premier. Corel (Ulead) has MSP (Media Studio Pro 8.0), where the clips do not automatically slide left.

To find out why this is important, try rendering a project filled with gaps between clips..;)

So the only real alternative, to ensure audio sync, is to leave the clips on the overlay track, in the positions where I wanted to insert them, then do a full screen overlay so that the overlayed clip replaces the main clip completely.

The only problem with this method, of course, is No Transitions!

Unless they have put the transitions facility in the soon to be released VS11.5 + then there is a work round for transitions in overlay tracks using VideoStudio.

Hi Wayne

Why do you need to ¡¥Split Audio¡¦

You can cut the video into sections and mute the audio as required.

You can use the audio from your clips even though you have split audio.
Simply hit the audio mute button for a particular video clip.

Your audio will always be in sync¡¦.

Note:- when you split audio the video clip is muted.(this can be undone) a sound clip is placed in the voice track.

Hi Trevor,

I understand what your saying but I need to split the audio because, as its a wedding speech, it needs to be constant, regardless of what video clips I have showing.

In other words, when I switch to a clip of the guests sitting at the tables, the speech(from the main video clip) has to carry on, even though you can't see the speaker.

Then, when I switch back to the main clip again the audio needs to be in sync with the speaker again.

Cheers,

Hi Wayne

Sorry for repeating myself but you should not have to split audio.
Splitting audio just makes things difficult, especially if you need Audio Sync¡¦

Place your wedding speech in the top track

Place the clip with guests sitting at the table in the overlay track (any position you like)
Mute the audio on this clip.
Use the Direction and Styles to create a simple transition.
Right click the preview screen for more options. ¡¥fit to screen¡¦¡X¡¥anchor to¡¦ etc.

Another option would be to use ¡¥rubber banding¡¦ to adjust the main track volume.

If you do have problems with audio sync, due to split audio, you can always undo.

Good luck
