Problem with Quicktime videos

Post by keimosabe »

I have searched and cannot find an answer to this question so can anyone point me in the right direction?

I am using VideoStudio 11 with Vista and everything works fine except Quicktime files. I can preview the clips just fine, but once i add a clip to the "movie" timeline, playback goes to crap.

Even if I render the project the final result is a horribly slow video file. It only happens with Quicktime files so I am assuming that it's something with that codec, but I don't know what to upgrade, replace, or fix to correct the problem. Anyone have an answer? Thanks in advance for the help guys

The more-compressed formats frequently cause trouble. Try converting your file to MPEG-2 with SUPER (FREE!!!) or SVCD 2 DVD MPG (FREE!!!). Although, I'm not sure if these programs run under Vista.

MPEG-2 is not completely trouble-free either.... If you have trouble with MPEG-2, you'll have to look around for a different conversion program to convert the file to AVI/DV (the most trouble-free format). Video Studio can save a file as AVI/DV... but only if it can open & decode the original file.

Oh... SUPER can save in AVI/DV format, but it doesn't have the correct settings/options for NTSC. It might work OK for PAL.

There have been compatibility problems between QuickTime video files and successive versions of Video Studio for some time. The basic advice always seems to be to retain the version of QT installed as part of Video Studio. Upgrading the QT version after installing VS always seems to cause incompatibility, and most problems, on the other hand, seem to be solved when the user reverts to the version which came with VS.

Not a great situation, I understand -- but that's the hand we have been dealt.

more freeware

Whilst SUPER may be able to successfully encode the quicktime files to mpeg2, it of course introduces an additional encoding step to the workflow. It would be better if Corel sorted out the problem that VS seems to have with quicktime.

Other "SUPER" like freeware programs you might be interested in are "AUTOGK" used to encode to xvid, and "Staxrip" and "MeGui" used to encode to h.264.
